p.1 #1 · Spyder3 Pro Calibration issues?

Hi,

There was a recent thread a similar issue but there didn't seem to be any resolution to the problem.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the calibration of their monitors with the Spyder 3 Pro.

I am currently running a consumer grade monitor (soon to be changed to an IPS monitor), and calibrate the monitor once a month. Each time the results are very consistent.

The issue is, I believe the Spyder 3 is calibrating my monitor incorrectly. My print jobs from professional print labs are coming back with the wrong skin tones. It looks like Oranges have been shifted to Red or Pink

I've now spoken with 3 separate professional labs and I'm fairly certain it's a problem with my calibration.

If I turn off the profile on the monitor, I can see the image is much more pink (similar to how my prints come back), if I turn the profile back on, the tones are correct.

Does anyone have any tips for correct calibration of monitors using the Spyder 3 Pro?

I have followed the on screen instructions from the software and reset the monitor's settings, and when prompted, adjusted brightness.
Gamma target set to 2.2, and a whitepoint set to 5800k.

I'm relatively inexperienced with colour management so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you getting a quality custom profile (not canned) for their printer/paper combination, loading it into PS and soft proofing it while working on it?

Yes that is correct, I am softproofing it with a profile specific to the paper and printer provided by the print lab.

I've performed some more testing and will be speaking with the Spyder distributor to try and resolve the issue; it certainly looks like I am getting a colour cast after calibration.

Definitely see if the distributor can help you out. Datacolor's quality control isn't always the greatest, and while it's (vastly!) improved over previous generations, the unit-to-unit variation on the Spyder3 is still less than ideal. In some cases I've burned through three or four units trying to get someone up and running.

for starters set a D65 white point instead

is the monitor standard gamut?

you may have a probe that falls toward the extremes

How about turning off calibration... and try a manual adjust using one of many test cards. Look at how your pics look like, does it have a colour cast??

How do the before and after look like in the Datacolour calibration program?? I have a hard time see any difference, it is pretty minimal...

Just an update, as I've finally gotten to the bottom of the issue.

It was the Spyder 3 Pro calibrating the monitor incorrectly.

I purchased a new monitor today that comes pre calibrated from the factory.

After comparing softproofing an image and comparing it to a colour chart from a professional print lab to ensure the colours were correct, I had a look at the images I previously had problems with.....
And sure enough, they were very red... so all along it was a problem with the Spyder which I've been using for some time now with an incorrect calibration!

Interesting. I have a Sypder3 Elite on a wide gamut NEC PA27 monitor and have the same issues as the op. My prints are too red/magenta even after making some custom printer/paper ICC profiles with a Spyder3 Print SR.

Have you sent the calibration kit back for Datacolor to confirm if there is anything wrong with it?

the spyder 3 struggles a bit on something with as large a gamut as the NEC PA

Skibum, So now that I have a wide gamut monitor, what problems will I have with using the Spyder for calibration?

Joe88, apparently there was a known issue with the Spyders where a batch around 2 years ago had a colour cast, so you may want to check that out.

Post an image here that you think the color and skintones look good on (be sure to save it with a color space) and a few of us can look and decide if the file even looks good or not.

Thanks for the help, but as I wrote above, I've resolved the issue, and it was the Spyder 3 calibrating incorrectly.
I'm speaking with the distributor to see if they can help me out with a repair / replacement.
