Not to come across as a complete prick, but...

How are Nikon lenses on Nikon cameras, regardless of AF or not, remotely considered Alt forum material? Not only does Nikon have its own forum, but it also already has a huge, high quality MF thread.

That would be like me posting 50 Sony images using Sony bodies and Sony lenses over at Nikon because I didnt want to visit the alt forum ( as if clicking two links is somehow work). I am sure those guys would find my thread equally out of place.

Dont take this as an attack on anyone, and I am sure most people would consider something like Canon bodies shooting Nikon glass alt-worthy (including FM's forum definition, which this thread seems to have evolved into), but a 'pure' Nikon thread is being fairly inconsiderate of the Alt forum users that come here specifically to avoid those very same threads.

Comlaint over, nice images people

This isn't a pure Nikon thread, just a Nikkor thread.

My opinion: if a certain Nikkor lens is considered alt on Canon, then it would be stupid to forbid Nikon users from posting shots with it here. Personally, I would only post AI, AI-S and other older Nikkor shots here, but not AF-D or AF-S lenses, but realistically, some Canon users use the 14-24G and other modern lenses.

people using nikon lenses on non-nikon cameras can't post in the nikon MF thread, yet many of us have nikon lenses.

as far as i'm concerned anything you have to manual focus or use an adapter for is alt enough for me. there is an FD/FL/ltm thread too for alt canon lenses.

Agreed, I'd call AF Nikkor's on Nikon DSLR's off-topic, but MF Nikkors on anything should be on-topic here (as should any Nikkor on a non-Nikon body). Just because the Nikon forum has an alt-ish thread doesn't mean we can't cover the same ground (heck, I never go into the Nikon forum these days, the Alt forum is simply a lot more interesting to me)

No, just uninterested in the primary focus of the Nikon forum (ie AF Nikkors on Nikon DSLR's, neither of which I use)

i never go there anymore either. not much of interest for me since i don't shoot a nikon camera anymore. there is more knowledge of manual focus nikon lenses on this forum than on the nikon forum as well and on the nikon forum almost nobody can compare nikon lenses to other lenses because they've never shot anything other than nikon.

And that's why I tried to word my rebuttal fairly neutrally - it seemed to me this thread had been created for Nikkor lenses on Nikon cameras, whatever the type. It's quite possible I misunderstood the direction of the thread.

if you look you'll see that most of the pictures are actually taken on canon cameras with a few on other brands including nikon. there was actually a debate earlier in the thread as to whether nikon on nikon should be allowed (it should).

some pics with the nikkor 105/2.5 AIS (none on a nikon camera):

Just wondering: Why do I see so few old Nikkors used in Nex cameras, even in the Nex threads?

they're expensive compared to old FD, FL, rokkor, OM, and pentax while also being rather large for their aperture/focal length. at least that's my hunch. also, you can use them on nearly any dslr so it's not that much of a novelty.

Compared to some of those, they are a little bit more pricey but certainly not what I would call expensive. I don't use them that often on my NEX as the adapter itself is rather large and with the lens it ends up being quite a relatively large kit. The results are great though....

well the cheap ones tend to be at least twice as much as the FD or rokkor version. the expensive ones from all brands tend to be around the same.

Price is really not a big decision factor as most of these lenses (generally speaking) are quite inexpensive... A hundred bucks here or there is not worth fussing over if you are getting a good lens.

maybe it's just me then. i've bypassed a bunch of nikkors because they cost $150-$250, when i can get an equivalent that looks as good (some better some a little worse) for $40-$150.

A lot of it seems to be the fact that the Nikkors are usable on Nikon cameras. Those with a long attachment to or collection of Nikon gear have little reason to go elsewhere unless they have specific needs or wants that Nikon doesn't supply (like myself and my love of compact, high-performance bodies).

I've noticed the same thing with Pentax. K mount lenses are about as rarely adapted to other mounts as Nikon despite being common and cheap.

I've noticed alt users tend to come in two groups. The first is interested primarily in maximal optical performance. This one tends to gravitate to Leica or Zeiss lenses, with the occasional exception. The second tends to be interested in cheap but good and/or unusual lenses and therefore ends up shooting OM, FD, M42 or similar lenses rather than the generally more expensive Nikon lenses.

Remember that while Nikon's known for good glass and cheap glass, there aren't many lenses in both categories outside of Nikon's excellent mid-speed 50's and the 55 Micro-Nikkors. Generally the good Nikkors run around the midpoint between the bargains and Contax lenses (or in some cases, more than the Contax equivalents). There remains a huge market for older Nikon MF glass which doesn't exist for any other alt system except the ZE/ZF and Samyang lenses.
