How do you feel about the 105/2.5, nixland? I currently have my eye on it.
I'm not nixland but I love my 105/2.5 lenses! they have the "3D" pop of a Zeiss lens! I have the pre-Ai, the Ai, and the Ai-S. All three are the same in sharpness. The pre-Ai has a tad more CA in high contrast. Also of equal sharpness is the 105/1.8 which is only faster. And sharper than the whole bunch is the AF 105/2.8 D Micro-Nikkor (With SIC) - which is also itself bested (in perhaps all regards) by the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED (With Nano-Crystal coating) - but now we're up around $800.
There's also a non-Ai and a specialized DC 105mm f/2.0 D (with "Depth Control") but I dunno about them - only from reading. The DC 105 is supposed to be specialized specifically for portraiture. <shrug> I think the non-Ai 105 is a just a single coated version of the multi-coated pre-Ai so will have more ghosts, flare, and CA - but I could be wrong.
I hope nixland will tell us more about his DC version!
There was a comparison between the Zeiss 100MP and the 105/2.5 AI/AI-S, and most people did not know which lens was which as long as you didn't try to do macro with the 105. It is an absurdly good lens for the price.
From my brief experiences with the 2.5, 1.8 & DC:
The DC color is more subtle & pleasing for portrait (less saturated a bit) and it's very sharp for closer distance but less sharp at longer distance.
The 105/2.5 color is bit more saturated & bolder (I like the color very much) and it's sharp on any distance, sharper and more contrast than the DC at longer distance.

I bougth Nikkor 105/2.5 yesterday.Did't think of buying it before, but when I saw it on the shelf in mint- condition with a decent price of 150 euro I couldn't resist.Went immediately out to take some shots and.....what an awesome lens it is! Sharp even wide opened, minimal CA ,great colours and bokeh.A keeper for sure!
Here are a few samples at f2.5 on NEX3C(lassic).They are 400ASA handheld,so could probably benefited from tripod/200ASA
Bifurcator....nice to see Japan photos...I used to live in Sendai and elsewhere...
Here are some pix I took a couple of days ago with my old 200/4-Q that I've since new in 1969, and my "new" AIS (found at pawn shop a couple of weeks ago)....
I took out my 200Q to compare to my "new" 200AIS...
Here's one from the Q shot @ 5.6 on my Canon 40D
My love hate for this lens at Infinity seems unwarranted. Its just my inability to focus this lens at Infinity by eye when stopped down. I've found I need to focus, wide open, make use of the microprism ring on my Rebel XT for something in the far distance and then stop down. Doing this gives nice and sharp Infinity photos.
Got to play with some heavy mist yesterday. I wish I had my Nikkor 28/2 on me but I chose to leave that at home and take my 105/2.5 and 50mm lens. Two shots with my Nikkor 105/2.5 Ai...
