Mike, thank you for your insight. I think I will settle with the Ricoh GXR + A12 module for now and the ZM 35/2. Do you have any wide-open or near wide open shot by the ZM 35/2 you can share.

Edward, that's encouraging to hear that the ZM will be soon back in stock thank you.

I found my used GXR camera, A12 module and VF2 on the GetDPI buy & sell for $910. I have noticed a couple more since then. Here's a direct link. I like the GetDPI buy & sell because it has a high percentage of rangefinder equipment posted, and it has an RSS feed which I can very quickly browse in my RSS reader. It would be nice if Fred would implement an RSS feed for the buy & sell here...

If you want a fast 50mm equivalent, for 'approximately' the price of the ZM32 f/2 you could also look at the Voigtlander (CV) 35mm f/1.2. There are two versions. The first one you should be able to find used for $900 or less. You can still get it new from Cameraquest, but his price on it has yo-yoed a lot. Prior to the version II announcement, it was $899, then when it was discontinued, he jacked it up a few hundred. When the II started to ship, he lowered it to around $999. Now it's at $1099. The current version sells for $1400 in the US, if you can find it. You can save about $150 buying from certain overseas Voigtlander distributors. It's what I did. PM me if you're interested. I don't want to out them in public lest they get in trouble. The only problem with this option is warranty service, which the US distributor naturally won't honor. The difference between the two versions is that the newer one is slightly smaller (but still large for a RF lens) and is reported to have somewhat better contrast. So far I haven't been disappointed with the new version on the M9. It's very good wide open and very, very sharp in a large central sweet spot by f/2. There is also the CV35 f/1.4, but it won't be as sharp wide open as the f/1.2 version, and it also has focus shift (not a big deal with EVF focus) and pretty strong field curvature. I recently picked up a used CV40 f/1.4 and will definitely try it on the GXR. It's a very small lens, especially compared to the CV35 f/1.2. But like the CV35 f/1.4, it too has focus shift and field curvature based on my limited use of it on the M9. Sam Waldron did a GXR vs. 5N shootout with his lenses, one of which was the 40 f/1.4. Also, Michael had a couple posts with comparisons of the ZM25 and/or ZM35 between the GXR and 5N, but I can't seem to find those.

Finding a fast 35mm equivalent is going to be a problem. It was what the OP of this thread searched for over the span of 10+ pages for his 5N, ultimately to settle on the Leica 28mm f/2. Yeah, that's a $4200 lens, but of all the used Leica lenses on the various buy & sells, it's one I've seen come up fairly regularly and often in the low $3000s... You asked about the CV28/2. I tested it on the M9 against the ZM28 and on its own, I think it's a good lens. Compared to the ZM though, it's lower contrast and doesn't catch up in sheer resolving power until stopped down past f/5.6 or f/8. The ZM is very good wide open centrally, and excellent by f/4, though on FF the corners need until around f/5.6 to be really good. On APS-C that probably won't matter as much. The CV has a smoother, gentler rendition than the typical Zeiss punch seen in the ZM28. It also has some focus shift. A 24/25mm would be a closer 35mm equivalent, however those are even more rare in rangefinder form and generally f/2.8 and slower, unless you opt for the $7000 Leica 24mm f/1.4 but you do have some options with one each from CV and ZM, and two currently from Leica, as well as a discontinued f/2.8 model. I'd probably go with the ZM25, which Michael has shown off nicely on the GXR.

Henrik: Thanks! I'll let you guys know here if I run into any problems with the GXR. Hope you're having a great time in Thailand!

Thank you, Ron I will check out the GetDPI Buy and Sell area.

I look at the CV 35/1.2 but it's a bit big for my taste since one of the reason I move to the GXR is size. I think I will look at the ZM 35/2 and the CV/35/1.4. Do you have any comparison between them? For me f1/.4 and f/2 arent that different and I will settle for the one with better IQ (color, contrast, sharpness).

Yeah, finding a fast 35mm equivalent seem to be quite an issue since the cost is still a consideration for me. I really like the 28 Cron but I think I will avoid it for now despite there's one selling near I live for $3,700 like new condition.

I am also look at some possible lens choice for portrait (longer end about 80-135mm FF equivalent). Near I live there are galore Leica 90mm M lens but I am so confused about different version: Elma, Tele-Elmar, Silver color version, Black version with coded and the price vary greatly from $700-2,000

The GXR A12 quickly ran out of stock at BH and there are some still available at Adorama but hopefully it will be back in stock by the end of this month

Glad I could help!

Yes, the CV35 f/1.2 is large, but still much smaller than a Samyang 35 f/1.4.

I haven't used either the ZM35 f/2 or CV35 f/1.4, other than a few casual shots on the M9 about a year ago when I was exploring lens options. My impression based on what I've researched online is that you'll be happier with the Zeiss. It will be the overall sharper, higher contrast, more Zeiss-like lens, and with virtually no distortion. There have been some who felt it had somewhat harsh bokeh at close distances, but it will probably depend on the background content. The CV is fairly soft wide open and has a lot of field curvature that should still be evident on APS-C. But a lot of people like it for its 'classical' characteristics and economical value. It's also really small. I instead opted for the CV40, which I believe shares many traits with the 35 f/1.4 and is even less expensive. You can probably find a decent used one in the $350 range.

For a portrait lens there are a lot of 50mm options at the wider end and you probably won't go wrong with any of them. You might be better served by a 75mm, but again, there aren't many options. There are a couple from Voigtlander and of course, the Leica Summarit at the higher end of the 'economical' scale. I believe Michael has the CV75 f/2.5 and might be able to offer some opinions on it. I have the 75 f/1.8. It's a fairly large lens and reasonable sharp wide open, though it's not razor modern-lens sharp, hence the reason it's called Helliar Classic. I find it quite nice for portraits because it's not bitingly sharp. But if it's in the budget, I think I would look for a used 75 Summarit. I believe Henrik has one. I have the 90 Summarit that I was able to find used for $1300. I think it's a step up from the CV75 f/1.8 and actually a bit more compact feeling too. For all the various 90mm options, check out Ken Rockwell's Leica 90mm reviews. He has a lot of info available. Though much of it will be fairly subjective, it should still give you a starting point.

Here are a few links to images I've posted (100% crops) illustrating the ZM25 and/or ZM35 on NEX and GXR:

ZM25 on NEX-5N and GXR

ZM25 on GXR - brick wall - edges at various apertures

ZM35/2 on GXR - brick wall - edges at various apertures

ZM25, ZM35, old C/Y 50 on NEX-5N - brick wall - edges wide open and f/5.6

Yes a CV 75/2.5 came to land in my bag thanks to some local horsetrading late at night in a doughnut shop.

While I haven't yet taken the 75/2.5 out to my brick wall, my guess it is fairly sharp across the field on the GXR (and probably also on the NEX too). It handles well enough; maybe the focus could be nicer but it isn't bad. It will focus past infinity so don't rely upon the hard stop. Other than the handling and handling flare less well than the really excellent ZMs, the CV75/2.5 seems sharp enough. I don't think I'd get rid of it except that I'd like go to a step longer and find a Leica 90, but for now this one is doing the job.

This full sized image of part of downtown Vancouver doesn't have all the sparkle of the images I took that same day with two of my Zeiss lenses but it is still fine in its own right.

Atran;

If you know someone i Bangkok, or someone who is going there, there are GXR M mounts and GXR bodies at nice package deals. $975 for GXR body and A12 M mount. If one pays cash there is a 5% discount.

I bought a really nice half case, black leather, and a Voigtländer 15/4.5 II at the store and had a chat with the owner, a really nice guy. Thanks Ed for helping me find it.

I have the following lenses as per now:
Voigtländer 15/4.5
Zeiss ZM 18/4
Zeiss ZM 50/2
Leica M 75/2
Leica M 90/2.8

I will not keep all of them as some are too close, especially given the fact that I have the A12/28 and 50 modules.

I can vouch for all lenses, except for the Voigtländer 15mm which is brand new and not tried out yet. I did get to check corners on a full frame camera in store so I know my copy is solid though.

My stand out lenses are ZM18/4, and the Leica M 75. The ZM50/2 is a superb lens but my copy is a bit loose in the focusing ring. The ZM50 and the Leica 75 are too close in focal length for me and as I just found the Elmarit-M 90/2.8 the Leica 75 will probably have to go. It is too much of a gap between the 18 and the 75 to get rid of the ZM50 which I would rather do. With the ZM18, the ZM50 and the M90 I find I have a good balance.

I will have a hard time parting with any lens though, I find the Leica M75 Summarit better than the Summarit 90/2.5 (tried both before buying and the 90 definitely has more CA wide open) but I bought it since I thought I wasn't going to find an Elmarit-M 90 anytime soon. But in Bangkok, there were four mint ones on a shelf...

Yes, the 90 Summarit has some CA. I never noticed it on the M9, until I tried it on the NEX-5N. LR's CA correction clears it up pretty well.

henrik, if you knew that a full frame GXR module (or some other M mount camera from another, at "affordable" prices) were to be available soon, what would you consider doing to your lens line up? Would it change if 1.5 crop were not the only or the primary platform you have?

I know for sure the ZM18 is staying in my bag. The rest... not so sure. I'm thinking of consolidating my ZM25/2.8 and ZM35/2 into a ZM28/2.8 for that eventuality... not sure if I will regret losing the f/2 35. Auto ISO to the rescue I guess.

The 75 would be too short for me on FF; it really is too short for me already I think, so it would have to go. I have always liked the look of the ZM Sonnar 50/1.5 and it would be handy to have one faster lens even on crop. For sure on FF I would want a 28mm... as you know it's my favorite focal length. On FF and medium format I never had anything as wide as the ZM18 so that'd be a treat to have the full perspective back from that lens. Maybe I'd end up with:

ZM18/4
ZM28/2.8 maybe
ZM50/1.5
Elmarit 90/2.8 or ?

Not a particularly fast line up. This isn't too bad a grouping for me even for 1.5 crop.

Thoughts, anyone?

I bought my lenses with FF in mind, since I am back to shooting film at this moment, but keeping an eye on the upcoming M10 or anything equivalent in FF.

I am currently shooting the ZM 25, 35/2, 50/2 and 85/4. So far the 25 is wide enough for my needs but if I need wider, then it will be the 18. The only lens I would replace is the 85 because of its max aperture, but the IQ is so good, I really would do it reluctantly.

PS. Henrik, you're welcome

Michael: as with Ed, I tend to buy my lenses with full frame in mind, always.
A short answer to your proposed lens line up: very well thought out. And believe me, the ZM18 will be useful on full frame, for sure.

The long answer: *)

The first "compromise" to that notion was when I bought the ZM18 for use on the GXR M.
I had the M9 at the time and was surprised at how good the ZM18 was on full frame.
So, I have decided the ZM18 is a keeper regardless of format but with the intention of being a cross format lens. I scrounged up a "used" ZM18 finder for it since I am still hoping for full frame later on.

For full frame my "ideal" RF setup would be: 21f2.8, 28 f2 or f2.8, 40/50 f1.4 or f2, and a 90f2.8.
A skeleton outfit would be: 25/28mm and a 50mm lens. Nothing more.

For cross platform, or APS-C mixed in with full frame, the options get a bit messed up and
sometimes a lens transforms well into the other and sometimes not.

I found a little of the ZM25 got lost on APS-C, turning into a slow-ish normal lens but I found the ZM50 works just as fine on APS-C. The 21mm is little "dull" for me on APS-C as I have never been fond of 35mm lenses.

With APS-C I find the transitions are more floating, for full frame it can make sense to have a 28mm and 35mm, even a 35mm and a 50mm - or all three. On APS-C I find that neither the 28 nor the 35 comes into their own on that format. Their neither fish nor flesh so to speak. A 21mm would do very well on APS-C as we have seen but for me that is an expensive route to get a rough 35mm with a look that is a bit different. Also, it would not be wide enough for me, craving at least 28mm equivalent as a bare minimum on the widest side.

Having a 50mm and 75mm on APS-C makes in my opinion one of the lenses redundant. Both the ZM50 and the Leica M Summarit 75 are superb lenses, I was a bit smitten by the Summarit 75 as a landscape lens as well as a portrait lens.
For close shots the rendition of the lenses are very similar, as is the quality and even the bokeh. Most people would not be able to tell them apart at all. The 90mm does make more of a difference, and for "maximum" reach with "minimum" price penalty the Elmarit M90/2.8 is the ticket for me. If I were more into portraits again I would keep the Summarit 75, and I have seen some really fabulous landscape shots taken with it, it just happens to sit in between the two other options I have.

The Elmarit M90/2.8 is a bit bland with regards to bokeh, I think. For landscape / cityscape it is a great lens. As I already wrote, I got it as it becomes a 135mm equivalent on APS-C and that is handy.

A skeleton outfit on APS-C - and actually really nice on full frame - for me would be: ZM18/4, ZM50/2 and Elmarit M90/2.8.

The only gripe with that would be that I would have preferred a f2.8 or f2 for the 18mm. But, I'd rather have great wide open performance on a slow lens than lackluster performance on a fast lens for wide angles. On full frame 18/4 is sweet.

For full frame I would add a 25 or a 28, but not really use it that much on APS-C I guess.

So a cross platform minimal outfit would be: ZM18 (ZM25/28) ZM50 Leica M90.

Given the inherent, or practical, limitations of RF focusing with fast glass I am quite happy with f2/f2.8 and prefer small, cute, yet potent lenses.

Since my ZM28 would not focus properly on the M9 I had to shift to the ZM25 which I was a little reluctant to do, only because of the viewfinder issues. Quality wise the ZM25 is exceptional, bordering on "clinical", but I don't mind. For practical RF use having a viewfinder for lenses below 28mm is not a bad idea, you can leave it on camera while shooting longer lenses and scout the view before changing lenses. You can also use the finders on their own to scout a scene.

*) I have too much time to sit and write:
Coming back from Thailand I smuggled some little bugger inside me through customs and it does not allow me to keep any of the food or drinks, all passes right through, luckily in one direction only. After riding the fever train in Bangkok two days and then on the plane home for 14 hours I have been in a state of lethargy, though fever has lifted. It is a rough chore just keeping myself from dehydrating and I have eaten one or two slices of white bread a day for the past two days, after the initial starvation in Bangkok and the flight home where I could not really eat. I am off fresh fruit, fibre, sugars, lactose and meat. All that climbing in to shape in Krabi has been reduced to skin and bones in five days. But, I am not complaining, I am home, I have a nice warm bed and a flush toilet. Snug as a bug.

PS
I am sitting at the kitchen table. Don't get any funny ideas.

In full frame terms my ideal kit comprises the 21–28–40mm focal lengths, which I have only had with the Ricoh GRD2 — the GRD3 not having a 40mm adapter lens. Incidentally, although "my mother always taught me" that adapter lenses were no good, the 21mm for the GRD cameras are outstanding, the 21mm adapter for the GRD3 and GRD4 allowing one to keep the maximum f/1.9 aperture.

For a full frame camera, I would use the following:

—Elmarit-21 ASPH
—Summicron-28 (alternating with the Summicron-35v4)
—Summilux-50 pre-ASPH
—Tele-Elmarit-90
(The ZM18/4 is too wide for me on full frame).

For the GXR, my favorite lens by far has been the Elnarit-21 ASPH, supplemented by the CV15/4.5, and I haven't used the Summicron-28 much, although I like it a lot.

Henrik, sorry to hear that you're ill — see my e-mail. Incidentally, I got 24-hour food poisoning in London this week when on a day full of meetings I had to wolf down an Italian meatball/pamigian-cheese sandwich at a well-know coffee shop chain. The following day, after not eating anything I went out to find something bland, and saw a pub in nearby Shepherd's Market in Mayfair with an upstair's dining room that advertised "English and Thai Food" and puzzled the Thai staff upstairs by ordering chicken and mashed potatoes in Thai, since they would have expected someone speaking Thai to order their Thai food — it was the blandest thing I could find and ate only the mashed potatoes.

just read your update. Perhaps I can guess the name of that Coffee shop.

Sorry to hear you've brought back some flora, or is it fauna, from Thailand. Please, no photos. :P

Thanks to you all for your thoughts on this. I must ponder, and shoot both the 35 and 25 some more on the GXR before coming to any conclusions. The 35 while it's a great performing lens doesn't sit on front of my camera all that much and on a FF host it would sit in the bag more often than not. I've kept it for a rough 50mm equivalent field of view but on APS cameras I'm finding I have less use for that EFOV yet on film I'm perfectly comfortable with a 28 and 50 for a great many situations.

On the GXR I'm finding I use the 18mm more and more, which isn't much of a surprise. Maybe it'll be too wide a view on FF for regular use but I can reconcile keeping it in the stable; it'll be handy often enough and at any rate I will need a FF host for it before I'd consider getting rid of it.

Here we are almost half way through January and my project to use the 35mm more than not is slowly moving along. I'm looking more forward to February to give the ZM25 the lead.

If I had to guess likely I will stay with the f/2.8 devil I know, the ZM25, and pass on the 28 for now; sell the 35 and adopt a 50/2 or 50/1.5 in exchange; sell my CV75 eventually.

FF 18/25/50/90(or keep CV75)
EFOV 27/38/75/135(112.5)

Or as an alternative the ZM28 would be 42mm EFOV, Part of me wants to simplify further but that may need to wait until someone kindly builds the FF camera some of us are looking for.

I would keep the 90mm as the long end - always had one ( 85-100 ) both on crop and FF and loved them. But then it gets complicated : I like the 28mm -that brings the ZM18 into play for crop, but would require at least a 28 for FF. Right now I have a ZM35 as a "normal" - nice lens, fast enough, but going FF with 18-35-90 is a little bit stretched. Going 18-28-50-90 would be something, but I don't know if I would still take the 18 over to FF and that would also be a 4-lens kit, and not 3. 35 is nice on FF, but I prefer the 28 as wide, and after that the first interest is the long end - a 90. Still not really sure about this, but then again, that FF will not happen over night

Hello all; joining this party late, I know, but want to add my 2¢'s worth.

Background: recently retired from pro. photography; my last camera (A850) is up on the BS board presently. In the meantime, since the DMR Bible thread days, have been looking for the right compact/EVIL/etc. camera and, like many here, have pretty much had them all. None, not even the X-100, satisfied, tho' the images it makes, at that focal length, are excellent.

I waited until the reports of corner smearing etc. on the NEX 7 came out; I had one on order and cancelled it. The NEX 5N does not have an ergonomic shape (for me) and I really did not know where next to look, until I came across a post by Godfrey over at GetDPI which led me to the GXR.

I now have one, with the S10 module (this was the easiest way at the time to get the GXR body, and I got an M module from Popflash last week. Frankly, I am amazed at the intelligence built into this tiny thing.

A quick aside: do the menu items change with the modules; two items (the MF modes and the "photoscanning" menu choices do not seem to appear on the S10 as far as I can see)?

My last remaining paying work on the photography side is for a local architect and I need UWA for interiors, mostly. This has been my frustration with the µ4/3rds Pannys: excellent ergonomics, and a very good EVF, and a swivel LCD, but still with AA filter and no UWA low-distortion primes. I know the 7–14 is very good, but the files still look like they come from a small sensor, to me (probably just prejudice, but still).

So, cut a long story short, here I am. Playing with the S10 to get used to the interface, and waiting for the M-module; this is my lens kit for now, all to arrive soon:

CV 15.4.5 (if this is not wide enough, then I will get the 12/5.6; apparently both work well on the GXR). The interiors I work in are not cramped, but I often used the 14 end of the 14–24/2,8 when I was doing a lot of this work, so I probably will need the 12).

Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 (this will be the walk-around lens, along with the A12 28)

A12 28 and 50 modules (still do a bunch of macro work, too, and the built-in max. magnification is all I need)

A fast 50 (or 55); a friend has a bunch of M42 fast 50s and I get to play with these too, and he may sell me one.

There's the full kit.

If the A16 M is reality, I would keep the A12 M anyway, I think; they are so small and (IMHO) very inexpensive for what they are. I can't believe that the GXR is not centre-stage in more places. Cheers to all, KL

A quick aside: do the menu items change with the modules; two items (the MF modes and the "photoscanning" menu choices do not seem to appear on the S10 as far as I can see)?

Hi Kit, congrats on the GXR! Yes, that is my understanding. Some menu options and certain features are dependent on the module on the camera.

I too am surprised the GXR is not as frequently considered by others in this forum. One factor may be that cameras like the NEX also offer a native AF lens solution and seems to be fairly important to many. This has been reinforced in my mind by much of the Fuji X-Pro-1 discussion revolving around AF performance. It's also possible that the majority of alt users adapting manual focus lenses are adapting those for SLRs rather than looking for the most compact options available from rangefinder lenses. Therefore, we're likely a niche of a niche.

As you likely read farther up in this thread, I also recently took possession of a GXR and A12 M module. I did so in part because it was available used at a reasonable price, but also because I know it will work as it should, and can get it now. I will also likely get the 16MP module whenever it ships, though I am a bit cynically inclined to think Ricoh will use this and the other 16MP modules, both confirmed an rumoured, to beef up the GXR's performance specs. It could be possible that it will mean the repurchase of the entire camera anyway in order to take full advantage of any performance improvements. This would be worth it IMO if they eliminate the truly annoying one second freezing of the camera after each capture.

If someone is primarily interested in running LTM or M lenses on a compact camera, the GXR should be at the top of the list for sure. Such a solid, well thought out, unit.

Probably GXR isn't as commonly discussed in some locales due to less exposure; there are only a handful of authorized dealers in the U.S.; none at all in Canada; coverage is spotty elsewhere in the world. No doubt the lack of a standard AF lens mount holds it back. Maybe a K mount module will start to change that.

I'm actually glad to learn the A16M isn't due anytime soon. With any luck Ricoh will bypass the A16 M module step and bring out a full frame version.

Kit; welcome to the GXR club, a small crowd.

You can actually choose in camera whether to read settings from camera OR module.
You may need to reconfigure on or the other depending on your settings in order for them to keep. The reason for this I think is to enable "lock out" of zoom button to serve as exposure compensation and other settings where AF modules are not present as well as enabling the odd feature that one module might have that the others don't.

If you need any help with the settings once the M module arrives we can help you out, me and Michael have a pretty solid set of settings as per now. I love the fact that you can customize, then address hard buttons and also cancel out options.

I am still down and out and a bit lethargic but maybe we should put together a posting on GXR settings for MF glass users?

PS
Michael, no photos... ...I am preparing a video.
