Are they serious? 2.7x crop, yeah right...
Canon will bring something like that also, Pentax already did - Q.
In 10 years all those traditional camera brands will be absolutely meaningless.
Sony, Samsung, Panasonic are new Canon and Nikon.
When Apple brought the silly iPad, nobody was predicting that
the sale of computers/laptops would suffer. It is suffering big time.
In just a couple of years. In 10 years nobody will be using a Canon DSLR.
Nobody.
I say 4/3rds cameras are the smallest a camera can be with an interchangeable lens system actually being useful. Who knows, maybe 2.7x miniature bodies will be a huge boon for casuals but definitely not at the price point these cameras seem to be sitting at. The fact that they're really digging in with an assortment of lenses planned makes me shake my head. I would have liked to see them throw in with a 2x crop at least (1.5x preferably). I don't see how these are geared towards professionals.
I mean, who is looking at a Pana EP-3 and asking for an even smaller body?
I think the only explanation is that Nikon and Canon are very worried
about competing against their own small DSLRs which are their bread and butter.
So they are going for those silly little 2.7x crops, very clearly different.
But in the same time they will try to milk as much money
thinking that some funboys will buy anything with C and N on it.
Not gonna happen.
My opinion is that Canon and Nikon will step up to the plate here. I do however think it will take them quite a while until they "catch up" to some of the other manufacturers in this niche market. When they do, it won't surprise me at all if they quickly overtake the likes of Sony, etc. Canon and Nikon will not just fade away - no way. Just a matter of time (hopefully) until we see a good mirrorless option... Like a FF digital FE2!

I don't think the target market for this camera includes people who understand what a crop factor is. I don't know how they're planning on pricing it, but my guess is it's targeted at brand loyalists they've gotten hooked on their point-and-shoots who are willing to make a perceived upgrade without the hassle or intimidation factor of a DSLR. They can do this because they are Nikon, broadly synonymous with photography in a way Sony, Panasonic, and especially Samsung aren't. And I'm sure Ashton Kutcher will sell a few hundred thousand for them. In the States anyway. Do they force him on other countries as well?

This "niche" market is already 40% of the exchangeable lens camera market in Japan. If they are going to catch up, they'd better do it fast. It must be said though, that for the average camera user, the Nikon solution may be just as useable as m4/3 or NEX. Most people tend to prefer infinite DOF, and I'm sure there's a very good sensor in that little, black box. And as for lenses, most lenses sold are zoom lenses with f-stops ranging from 3.5-5.6. Compared to that, 2.8 is almost blazingly fast
FF mirrorless? It might happen, but don't expect tiny lenses. Most of the lenses for NEX are already rather huge.

Those who don't understand what a crop factor is, not to speak about DOF, would include around 99% of people who take photos. Sounds like an interesting market to me

I see another advantage from Canikon in this department.
They can sell these cameras without hurting the DSLR own market, using their own brand lenses to make way for a future upgrade.
People like to stay within the same brand and Nikon F mount is a big plus for them.
I agree 99% of people does not know what a crop factor is, they just know they can use their old Nikon lens and new Nikon lens on this camera, and in the future upgrade the body to DSLR (of course not with the CX lens).

The problem for Nikon is that most of those who will upgrade, will upgrade to a mirrorless system with a larger sensor, not to a DSLR. Why would they want a mechanical camera after using an electronic one? In five years, DSLRs will be as alien to new amateur photographers as film is to most now.

Looks like Sony is the only one who is getting it right, mostly. All I need from Sony now is a FF sensor.
It will come soon. Rumors are there will be three FF bodies in 2012. I'm sure one of them at least will mirrorless, as none is rumored to be a classic DSLR design.

Sure we'll be using Canon and Nikon in 10 years, because *someone* has to take all the fast-actiony shots, and EVIL cameras just aren't cutting it.
I just pulled a very benign AF-C test with my NEX-5N, kit lens, and good light. Let's just say, Canikon have absolutely nothing to worry about unless every photographer on the planet limits themselves to non-moving objects.
