Just received my 28 1.8 this afternoon. Took some test shots and am very happy with how it performs. Even at 1.8 the IQ is quite useable (window lighting, 400ISO), and at 2.8 it's really outstanding. I will definitely be keeping a copy of this lens for my 550D. I don't have any presentable photos from this lens yet (and I don't like posting photos of test charts/brick walls to demonstrate a lens' performance), but I will share some keepers in the future.
That's not the case - I did not seem to find sharpness ANYWHERE in that pic. I brought a ton of pictures like this from yesterday's concert - look (almost) fine at screen resolution but when checking for sharpness it's nowhere to be found.
I don't really understand what you think you're arguing about. That's a non-sequiter, because the above doesn't contradict anything that I wrote.

I just meant that one can't judge the sharpness of the lens based on a shot that seems misfocused. For the sake of the lens, I hope it is, because if it's well focused it means the sharpness of the lens is beyond awful.
But sorry if I seemed rude and/or incoherent, it wasn't intentional.
There have been plenty of examples already posted in this thread of the kinds of results you can expect with a good copy of the 28. A reminder, at f/2:
I agree that elford's samples are particularly bad. I am satisfied with the 28 at 2.0 and don't personally have a need for the 24 or 35L (though I sometimes covet them).
Elford your examples are far worse than my lens. My 28 is much better than yours at 1.8 and like I said f/2 is just fine. Are you sure they are focussed?

I am pretty sure that they are focused. I focus pretty carefully -- always use one point when I autofocus, and I tried manually focusing in live view just to make sure focus wasn't the issue (yes, that was my first thought too!)
I just posted the crop here but the originals have more context and it looks like they are in focus. I just added you as a contact on flickr, so you can take a look at them for yourself (I have a set named after the lens which has the full size originals)
And yes I do believe you got a better copy than mine.
