I'm going to be traveling from the US to Italy for a couple weeks and am trying to figure out how to best deal with having enough storage space. I know there's another similar topic being discussed now, but I had a specific question that I didn't want to get buried in that thread.
In an attempt to keep costs down, I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to plug a USB portable hard drive and a memory card reader into a computer at an internet cafe, or hotel lobby and copy the pictures from the CF card to the hard drive. I know here in the US, hotel business center computers usually give you pretty limited access, and I suspect that I wouldn't be able to access the CF card and drive to copy the photos. Anyone have experience trying to do this in Italy at internet cafes or hotels?
I'm just trying to avoid spending the money on something like a NEXTO device, or buying a bunch more CF cards.
Unless the hotel/internet cafe PC has their USB ports locked down, I don't see a problem. You would plug both devices in, and given they both show up without any problems, you should be able to just copy away. It will be very slow over USB, but it is better than nothing.
One alternative is to copy the files to the local drive on the PC then copy to the portable hard drive. Remember to delete your files from the PC.
