Vincent, your shot is definitely much improved after post-processing. After reading all the effort you put into one single shot, I understand what you meant when you said that you felt PP took up too much of your time.

Very interesting to see the different photographic approaches to the same subjects! And to see familiar styles in the pictures - Philippe, in your first shot your typical style is really easy to see! And the 50 1.4 draws such buildings exceptional good with a lot of plasticity.

And I haven't seen the reflections in the building at all (very nice, Heinz and Philippe).

Vincent, my favorite of yours is the bw-shot. It might also been your nicely post-processed picture, but there's too much water and too much sky for my liking. Cropping it to a more panoramic format could make it even better in my opinion. Shifting would have been also not necessary by leveling the horizon and if cropping to panoramic view is an option for you.

Carsten: architecture with a fish-eye is exactly the right approach to have much fun with new perspectives. I like it - especially the last image. And a very funny story to it, Vincent. I thought about going to this place again today just to watch if Vincents story has some truth to it... I would have liked it if it had...

And regarding the reds from the 5D2: that's why I use the "neutral" camera profile in Lightroom for most pictures. Reds are much less saturated with this profile.

Markus, interesting about the "neutral profile". Perhaps there is something similar in Aperture. I really need to sit down and go from good to expert with this program at some point. I also want to give Capture One another try, it is meant to be very good. Great shots, btw, but I prefer the first one, which is a very interesting and unusual angle of that building. The 17 TS-E is really a lens which makes me consider Canon (before I reject the idea ). Maybe the next time we meet I can try it?

Philippe, we wouldn't *dream* of keeping you away, so start planning around 1 1/2 months from now. After a brief discussion here (I will get Bernhard to come along this time too), we could try to pick a date early, so that plans may be made. What about the weekend of September 18/19. Is there anyone here who would like to come, but cannot come on that weekend? (The following weekend I cannot, btw).

Anyway, Philippe, I agree about the first shot. It is even missing a ground, and feels like it is floating a bit. But the second and third shots are both excellent! I prefer the third one because of the girl, but without, I would prefer the second one. Both great. I think you are too hard on yourself. You are a busy man, and fitting photography in between all this, with the distractions which come from thoughts of work, I am amazed at what you produce. The best photography is IMO made when the mind cup is empty, and the time cup is full I try to produce such situations every week or two, just for 6-8 hours, but only succeed sometimes. Then I can work very nicely.

Vincent, I think I like this version of the first shot better. I won't comment on the second one as it isn't alt Don't cancel your 25/2 order! If you don't want it, I will buy it! Your 25+24TS-E plan is interesting, but wouldn't it make more sense to go 21+24TS-E in that case? That would give you one lens with a bit more width. Or maybe you don't even need that. 24TS-E shifted left for one shot, then right for another, and wham, perfect panorama with almost no effort. No alt glass though = no posts here. I realized recently that a significant part of my enjoyment of photography comes from posting and discussing it here.

Here is a shot which I don't think anyone else managed to get That good ole fisheye. Interesting that the venetian blinds appear to be on the outside of the building. I am surprised they have not been vandalized, but then again, this is Berlin.

It would be great fun being able to join in some time. Seeing your images here, and reading the comments, make me inspired despite usually being a lonely photographer when out and about.

September 18-19 is not possible for me. I can see two alternatives; September 10 or October 8 where September 10 feels too close for some perhaps, or not? October 8 is a Saturday (with nice weather I heard).

Morgens,

/Jonas

>> Some of you commented that they recognized the "philber style", which I did not know I had. But now, I see that, out of all of you, I probably rely more on focal length, simple composition, and lens quality to create my shots. I must work harder at making my photography more ambitious, more deliberate, more demanding.

@Philippe: Given that most of your shots have architectural subjects (I include statues here) my hypothesis is, that two factors contribute to the "philber style". First, many structures or lines which are vertical in reality are not vertical in your pictures. Second, you seem to have a preference for cropping tightly and to not include all aspects (corners, etc.) of a subject in your picture.

With this, you break (intentionally or not) a "rule" in architectural photography that demands to keep all vertical lines vertical in your picture. This can be achieved by holding the camera parallel to the ground without tilting it up or down when shoting (holding the camera parallel to the subject helps additionally), with shift-lenses or in post-processing, whatever is preferred. And because you do break this rule very consistently, I would call it a personal style.

This style stresses your view on the subject, because you use the camera and the lens as an extension of your view. You move your head or your eyes up or down, and the camera follows this view. By looking at your pictures, this tells me something of you as an photographer and how you look at the world around you. In reality our brain compensates the perspective distortion that results from looking up and down and ignores the non-vertical lines, but less so in images. The difference to standard architectural shots is, that here the vertical lines are straight, which induces less confusion in our visual system and the observer can find his own angle of view. This approach stresses the subject more than the photographer IMO.

For me it is an interesting question under which circumstances and for which subjects I like the "classic style" vs. the "philber-style" more. Not easy to answer I think but worth thinking about...

Vincent, I had something like this crop in mind (your crop comes close):
http://www.paintingwithlight.de/FilesEx/vincent.jpg
But I might be very biased in this respect, because I crop most of my pictures this way (look at my homepage where I have this format for all pictures....)...

And one more picture, ZE 35 1.4, wide open:
http://www.paintingwithlight.de/FilesEx/ze35_14_04.jpg
I actually like this lens wide open very much, even for architecture and even without focusing on the building itself. In the bokeh there's enough detail that this can work. BTW, Philippe, I share almost any of your observations on this lens, although I find it possibly more different from the 35/2 than you (at least compared to your first comments). The f1.4 has clearly less macro-contrast in all apertures, but more details when stopped down. My personal view on this is, that I like the new 35 more than the 35/2 when stopped down, but am not sure which lens I would prefer at f2.0 where the rendering style of the 35/2 is very unique. I will probably have a hard time deciding if I want to replace the 35/2 with the 35/1.4... Thanks a lot again for giving me the opportunity to test your lens - Extremely helpful!

Markus, that is a very clean shot, postcard ready! Very nice. I will certainly buy the 35/1.4 some time in the next month or two, so if you have a Nikon-Canon adapter, you can try mine again.

Markus, that is a great shot! I would love to hear from you why you shot it wide open, since it is exactly what I would never do, but it obviously works well.
Regarding the lens, Yes, I agree with you. When Zeiss lent me a pre-production model for 20 mn along with a 35 f:2.0, they seemed very close to each other, except wide open or close. My opinion has changed in this respect, and I now consider them quite different. In particular due to the greater amount of detail from the f:1.4, and how this affects the rendering.

Frankly, Joakim, there are easily enough talented FM photographers in Sweden that you could set up a FM meeting in Stockholm. I would love to come.

p.8 #20 · FM Berlin Photo Meet

On Saturday morning Philippe sent me a text message that he had arrived at Berlin airport. Time to get a coffee and prepare for the first FM Berlin Photo Meet. I packed my bag with my Canon 5D2, the Nex-3 and some alt lenses and went to Carstens apartment. My wife and me visited Berlin to walk around and know the city a bit better, looking for an apartment to move to our capital by end of the year. Carsten knew of an apartment in the same house that he lives and was nice enough to invite us to see his (identical) apartment.

After that Carsten and me used the tube to get to the Literaturhaus in Charlottenburg where we wanted to meet the others. As all of that was pretty much a series of blind dates, we knew that Philippe was already there, but did not know how he looked. I took my cellphone, called Philippe and said to Carsten: "Let's see who picks up his phone"

A short time after Markus (Ulff) arrived and we did have a nice late breakfast, talking about us, gear, Berlin and where to go for some shots.

Breakfast still-live, shot by Carsten with my Canon and the Leica Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm f/2.8:

Since Vincent and Ignacio would arrive a bit later, we decided to visit famous Leica dealer Meister across the street from the Literaturhaus and then slowly walked Kurfürstendamm for some random shots until the others arrived.
