p.31 #1 · FM Berlin Photo Meet

It was 05:30 pm according to the EXIF and this is what I remember. Check his shirt with a dropper, it is white. Also, I remember the golden glow of the color of the bricks from the building in the OOF background. But, as always, remembering a color mood is quite difficult off course. The Nex has a quite weak IR filter and I normally use a IR filter on my Nokton V1 but I don't remember if Jonas' lens had one attached.

Hmm, maybe it is really IR leakage then.

Hmm... No, I don't use any IR filters. Heinz, I loaded your image into Photoshop and measured the shirt. I read a clear blue cast. (Method: I saved the image. Loaded it in Photoshop. When asked I told Photoshop to use the sRGB colour space the image came with, no conversion thank you. The collar isn't evenly coloured due to the shadows but there is a blue cast wherever I measure.)

Guys, I know where the problem comes from. My shirt is not white, but tan , or cream coloured. I know, I should have worn white with a tie, but didn't...:-))))))

Maybe... if we want to discuss these minute details we shouldn't forget to bring our mini GCC cards making sure we have some good references.
I checked my images and I have one from the same place taken 17:25 at the same place needing a WB setting, in ACR this is) of 4050 and +3 (Nex-5 and Summilux-M 50/1.4 at f/4, no profile) and another taken 17:36 needing 3750 and +3 (Nex-5 with some Zeiss Contax rangefinder 28mm lens at f/5.6 I think). As we probably don't want such a clinical looking portrait we (or Heinz) don't need to adjust all the way but when looking at the portrait of Philippe I now believe it's a simple WB problem.

The image should be two notches warmer. That is to my taste and you know how personal opinions work. I once sat an hour fiddling with an image but wasn't really happy with the result. Then I went back to the raw converter simply to find that the image I planned to process, a couple of hours earlier, was the image next to the one I converted and opened in Photoshop. The one I worked with had an error in the WB (and no profile applied). Colours are tricky and after staring at the screen for some time my brain can partly adopt.

I'm sorry for the long post and I'm sure I tell you nothing new. I also don't understand the thing about IR contamination but I'll go look it up.

Nice take on the desk, Philippe.

If I am not much mistaken, you did quite a bit of WB on that shot with all the carts I have something like that, but the light in reality was very golden, right? My shot is in my final set.

Jonas, sensors are by default sensitive not only to visible light, but also to infrared light. This light can be (incorrectly) converted to visible values by the sensor. The Leica M8 was quite sensitive to IR light, leading to the necessity for IR cut filters on the lenses. Many cameras are slightly sensitive to IR light, not just the M8.

It is very true that it is hard to get a good white balance in PP, because our brain adjusts so quickly. I do carry an X-Rite Passport Color Checker, but mostly don't use it. I really should.

I see. I know about IR and guys paying a lot of money to get rid of the AA- and IR-filter. I just never read anything about the Nex cameras having a weak IR filter and being prone to IR contaminated images. Then Heinz added with saying he has an IR filter on his CV35/1.2 and then I was totally lost for some time

I think it is all sorted now though.

Back to the images. From your last, but soon to become penultimate, set I like the deserted scaffold on wheels with the roof in need for some care. It's a tricky scene though lacking balancing colours and with a soft light partly coming from the other side of the room. I wonder if you contemplated a more contrasty PP?

Hi everybody,
I have just found out about this FM meeting in Berlin ... exactly the same week-end I was in Berlin with my company!
I am very sad to have missed the opportunity to know you all and to spend some time shooting with you. I had a lot of free time, that I spent walking and shooting with a colleague, not being aware that I could join you.

I am enjoying all your photos... congrats to you all!!!

To end with a shot, here is a pic of my colleague's NEX:

Jonas, I tried with a bit more contrast, but found that I started losing detail in the shadows too fast. If you have tried it and would like to show it, feel free.

My last set of three, my favorite three I think. The last one is my favorite by some distance. I was standing on a very small table with my Gitzo GT3541XLS trying not to fall off

Carsten, I'm not super happy about the result as the image is so altered, and with the risk of making myself look stupid, but here is a suggestion:

From the ultimate set of yours... I like them all. I saw you taking the last one but didn't think it could come out like that. Great work!

EDIT: added the original version Carsten posted, and a clause to the first sentence.
