My guess is, for the "Pro" style crowd, this is a target aimed at S100, LX5, XZ-1, etc. because Nikon's solution in this market totally fell on it's face.

However, the upper pricing of that market is $500.

The upper echelon of that segment still has a fixed lens and a smaller sensor. For $500 you could get the J1 with the kit lens, and have better IQ and a bayonet. For this segment, the camera looks like a win. I guess it will take Nikon another try to home in on the m4/3 and NEX though.

And given the average situations in which these cameras will be used, the lenses will often be shot wide open anyway (at least the zooms). Absolutely. Most people on these enthusiasts' forums agree that the principle target market isn't ourselves. Here's where the problem starts for Nikon. The kind of people who are likely to be in the market for a camera in this sort of price range are going to make their decisions based on a very crude understanding of the performance criteria on offer. High ISO performance? Diffraction? Slow lenses? Incomprehensible. 10 Mpx? Why, that's less than uncle Fred's 5 year old Whatsit.

So Nikon's sales levels are going to be determined by how compelling an advertising campaign they can deliver; a steep hill in the current economic climate. Alternatively how many salesmen are going to steer their customers in the direction of these models instead of the copious range of competition? many of which can easily be sold on the basis of bigger sensors, higher resolution - or any number of easily understood characteristics: like price.

Sony are surely beginning to look like the front runner in this race.

More color please. I beg you.......

To be honest, I am really really disappoint with this one. Nikon totally drop the ball here. For size and weight, I'd get a P&S, for performance, I'd get NEX or even M4/3. Something totally wrong here. I don't know what they are actually thinking.

Nikon, after a long waiting and big lose market share, you give us this I wish Nikon is still the same company giving us D300, D3, D700. At that time, what a good memory. AH!!!

Sony is laughing at you.

While not targeted at enthusiasts, I am impressed by the processing power of the camera. In fact, I am particularly impressed by the 60 fps full res capture.

Also, their "Motion Snapshot" mode should be useful for the soccer mom crowd.

I look forward to seeing the next gen of DSLRs based on this sort of processing power.

Don't forget the 1200fps mode… I am kinda intrigued by this system. I would like to test one.

I suppose for it's target, it's ok. Soccer mom crowd is probably right.
I just don't know that those folks aren't better served by their current super-zooms, which have really gotten quite good.

Had they released this with a series of fast pancakes, I might think differently of it.
But they are going for consumer zooms, and pricing themselves very high for a soccer-mom market...

They only released three lenses, so the choices make total sense: kit zoom, zoo zoom and small mid-prime. I guess the next lens will be a wide zoom and after that some kind of macro lens. After that it will get interesting.

I'm sure Canon will be watching it's sales numbers closely both in Asia and out,
and will modify their plans as needed, I hope towards a G12 with a large mount and APS-H sensor.

I think this is what people have to remember. The market is not enthusiasts but "people intimidated by DSLRs"(Nikon's words). Asia is a gigantic market and is devouring mirrorless cameras far more enthusiastically than the North American market.

Yes many are disappointed by their choice but if it means they can make more money to R&D for their pro stuff, I don't care.

Interestingly, the cameras do offer some interesting tech. 60fps at full res may make this a very cool camera for parents at sporting events. 10MP may signal a very good sensor optimized for excellent low light and decent DR specs. We will just have to wait and see.

The problem is I doubt people will buy these for speed only. How come they can make money to R&D for their pro. It will be lucky if they don't lose money. If you go through all the forum so far, nobody (I should use almost) really want it.
Next entry level DSLR certainly can have the same speed by using the same processor. Why I want drop that much for it? I am sure future review will reveal its IQ limit due to sensor density.
The real problem is why buy this over competition, IQ will be worse, as for cosmetic, it is almost can be said ugly, compare to X-100, Pen, NEX. No taste at all.

You are still trying to compare it to other mirrorless cameras, even after both Nikon and other people here have explained that it is not aimed at this market. Why?

This is aimed directly at someone who outgrew their P&S and don't want to move to more complex products like most m4/3, NEX and DSLR products. It may compete somewhat with the GF3 and the simplest m4/3 cameras, but it has not only a slightly smaller sensor, but also significant advantages, such as the high shooting speed.

I think Nikon has a good chance of making this a success, and wish them luck. It is not aimed at his crowd though, so few here will be excited.
