p.1 #1 · Rodeo Bull Riding and Bullfighters

Craving action photography, I took the advice of an ex-bull rider/bullfighter and shot a rodeo. I usually do wildlife photography, and this was a new experience for me--flying bulls were a lot wilder than flying birds. The bull riding events with bullfighters rescuing bull riders were the high points of the action. (2011 Elks Rodeo at Santa Maria, California.)

1. One of the coolest bull riders in the event.

2. The trajectory of the bull's jump and twist is tracked by the white string of bull mucus. In the background dust, bullfighter (aka "rodeo clown") Aaron Hargo in the bright shirt gets ready to divert the bull from the rider after the dismount (next photo).

3. Bullfighter Hargo deflects the bull from the downed rider.

4. But the bull reels away from bullfighter Hargo and aims for the bull rider. A second bullfighter Donnie Castle joins the rescue.

5. Responding to bullfighters Hargo and Castle, the distracted bull reels again, giving the bull rider time to run to refuge.

6. In the next three photos the bull wasn't so easily distracted. As the bull charges, bullfighter Hargo intervenes, and the rider begins his scramble to safety.

7. But the bull leaps past the bullfighter and bears down on the bull rider.

8. With bullfighter Hargo in hot pursuit, the bull runs down the rider.

9. In a calmer moment, bullfighter Hargo interposes himself between the bull rider and the bucking bull.

Nice action, I will be shooting a similar event on the last weekend of this month, which is always fun.

I like your first image the most, it has a nice blurry background, the others are a bit busy which is something I need to work on myself.

Nice stuff.

Great event series

I too will be shooting bull-riding later this month in Salinas

(44 riders - 50 bulls, PBR elimination)

Your shots kindled my enthusiasm.

Tough to get back blurred in bull riding. Average rider stays on 5 seconds & how far can a bull get from the spectators in that time (even @ 2.8)

Regarding busy backgrounds at the rodeo:

The web is full of rodeo photos by top professional photographers, but with busy backgrounds--spectators, fences, gates, advertizing banners, rodeo crews.... After seeing all these cluttered images, I thought I could do better, but then I tried it myself. Like Rags said, the action is close to the chute. In addition, the rodeo arena is constructed in such a way that it is nearly impossible to get a line of sight that has both good light and a lot of distance between the bull/rider and the background. For obvious reasons, rodeo officials don't let photographers get into the arena itself or into the row of stock pens where the bulls are, so even a 2.8 doesn't have sufficiently shallow DOF to blur-out the background garbage.

So, how'd I get the blurred background in the first image? PhotoShop CS5. I masked out the bull and rider and used "lens blur" on the background. However, the background clutter is so similar in the variation of color, edge types, etc., to the bull and rider, it is difficult to make the mask. In addition, masking is complicated by the intricacies of the leather fringes, hair on the bull's tail, etc. Also, flying dirt is part of the action portrayal, so the aerial dirt needs to be in the non-blurred portion of the image. It's an easily flawed process.

But I'll keep trying. For one thing, the spectators right behind the action are mostly family of the rider, stockmen, and fellow cowboys. In some of the photos from this event, the concerned expressions on the spectators' faces tell part of the story. Also, I'll be photographing the smaller rodeos where I can roam more freely.

Rags, I'm really interested is hearing and seeing how you fared at Salinas--a really big time rodeo by California standards. --- John

Got got so pizzed at the backgrounds I bought "Alien Skin Bokeh" It's background blurring presets that is a PS or Elements plug in.

I'm challenged in PS (as in I don't know how to)

The Salinas event is a PBR elimination (not the rodeo) for riders & Bulls. It's at night and if you're a bull fan, its a great event.

I shooting a small rodeo in Norcal this Sunday, Where I can get in the ring with the bull

I shot last year and when the bull threw the rider, his eyes met mine (about 25' away) I froze, had major butt pucker when I realized I hadn't figured out how to get out of the ring. Yelling fans directed me to a ladder. I think I'll bring a change of underwear this week.

Good shooting John

In my (limited) experience, the bulls tend to do their thing right in front of the chutes, and rarely go very far out into the arena. I shot a small town rodeo the other night and was able to find a spot in a corner where I could look down the sideline just in front of the chutes. (It was after dark in a floodlit arena, and I was using a D3 and a 200mm f2 lens.) I was generally pleased with the angle and backgrounds I was able to get. Here are a few samples:

DBA --- Nice shots! They turned out great. Thanks for sharing these.

I've been scoping out the arenas for upcoming rodeos to try what you did (shooting along the sidelines), which would work best with the chutes along the long edge of the arena (instead of at the ends). I've found that most ticket-sales sites provide the chute-position information, and you can augment it with the satellite photos in Google Maps. This is especially important if (1) you need to determine the sun's direction for daytime rodeos, and (2) you need to buy a specific seat and aren't allowed to roam the perimeter of the arena (which was he case at Santa Maria).

You inadvertently answered another question I had: Is nighttime lighting at a rodeo arena good enough for photography? Your photos show that it is. In fact, the artificial lighting has the advantages (1) of being pretty much omni-directional--allowing photography from just about any line of sight, including shooting down the sidelines as you describe; and (2) the illumination is concentrated on the subject with the background much darker. At the Santa Maria Rodeo, I chose a position with the afternoon sun at my back, which put the action square against the chutes (which is why the red-shirted gate tender shows in so many of the photos), and everything in the background was brightly lit. Until I saw your photos I was thinking night rodeos may not be worthwhile. Unlike like some posted pro-photos I've seen, you also got the white balance right on for the artificial light. What setting did you use? Or did you correct in processing?

Thanks for sharing your experience. You expanded my horizons. --- John

John - White balance was definitely an issue under these lights. I've got some shots where the dirt is brown on one side of the image and green on the other.

I used auto white balance in the camera, but I shot RAW format and then used the Auto white balance in Lightroom. For these shots it seemed to work pretty good.

Happy shooting. Dave

I shot at a local rodeo Sunday and tried the "shoot for the side" idea.

So I got the PARKING LOT.. as a background... . I just can't win...

# 1 is great since it has the cleanest background and a good DOF.
