I have a question to those who use Contax G on the NEX. Which adapter are you using and how does it feel?
I recently purchased one off ebay on the lower price range. The built quality is not very good. It feels loose; and focus ring is not smooth. I don't know if I have a bad copy; or all the adapters are like this.
It seems the Metabones has the top quality, but I have read that it is heavier than others. What do you think?
I have one of the cheap ebay ones, and it works well. Once I had it in place, I wont take it off, because I am afraid it may never work the same. My only "complaint" is that the lens release lever is in an awkward position.
I had the Fotodiox adapter but had to return it because it was faulty - it eventually would bind and skip even without a lens attached. I just received a metabones adapter and the focusing works amazingly well. Not as smooth as a nice lens but much better than the Fotodiox and very solid. However, most complaints I've heard are true: I feels awkward to grip at first on the 5n as the focusing ring gets in the way, it's quite heavy, and you have to remove the adapter from the body to change to a different G lens.
I use Kipon. It is not perfect, as there are parts of the throw where resistance is more than others (or maybe the lenses are not perfect any more), but I have never lost a shot because of it, which means you can count me satisfied...
I too use a Kipon. It was very stiff at first and I noticed that it had grease in it so I put a drop of 3in one oil between the focusing ring and mount and worked it it in. Any little excess was wiped off and now does not reappear. The result- its much smoother and does not require so much effort to turn.
I have a cheap ebay one and a fotodiox version. I bought just the ebay adapter initially and it works great with the 90/2.8 but is a little loose with the 28/2.8. Then I bought the fotodiox one to use with the 28/2.8 and that works great.
I am using Metabones and I like that there is "enough focus ring" to grip.
I discovered that sometimes the movement is uneven. In this case, I usually succeed by mounting the lens on the adapter again and before locking it, turn it a couple of times.
But yes, it is heavy.
I've owned the Kipon, a generic version of the Kipon, and the Metabones. My thoughts:
Kipon: lightweight and small, medium grittiness
generic Kipon: lightweight and small, more grittiness and a noticeable notch at one part of the focus
Metabones: large and heavy, and takes up a lot of the finger room by the camera grip (on 5N and 7, maybe not on 3 and C3.) Smoother than Kipon in focusing, but not perfect. You have to remove the adapter from the camera to remove the lens.
