p.1 #1 · Has anyone bought the 270EX II?

This flash interests me and I think about buying it. B&H and Adorama both say: "New Item - No arrival date known". While there are some available for purchase in E-bay and Amazon, I must confess I am not sure that these retailers know the actual difference between the original and the Mk II. The fact that the pictures in these sites are all frontal (where the original and the Mk II are identical) also worries me. I thus wonder if anyone has actually bought one, and from where.

Also, if you have done so (which proves it's actually on sale), do you have any idea why B&H and Adorama don't have it in stock? The thing is, I'd rather buy from them.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

as you can see the mk2 has the sensor for the wireless on the front

Geez, I must have been asleep. There's a 270EX II coming out? I just bought v I. Looks like v II has an IR focus. Any other differences?

It can act as a slave. That's why I want it.

Happy shooting,

as Yakim says its a slaveable flash . It still uses the disco strobe AF assist.

You probably also missed the new 320ex . it was announced at the same time.

No near IR AF assist but both 270EX2 and 320EX sport IR triggers, sorta like a built in RC-1. I guess you can put your camera on a tripod, hand hold the flash 15 feet away and trigger the camera.

What? You can trigger the camera to shoot with the 270EX II? How?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

From what I've read, it'll be a delayed firing:

Canon USA Web site says:
Flash release function triggers the camera wirelessly from the flash on a 2-second delay, allowing the flash to be repositioned to illuminate the subject.

I really cant see the point in the remote.
I've used the RC1 (think its pretty good) but it does require a decent line of sight , and also certain angles.so if your aiming the flash towards the subject your unlikely to be at a good angle for the IR to trigger the camera.

You could probably do better by having an RC1 (or newer RC6) and holding the flash in one hand pointed where you want to point it and the RC1 in the other pointed toward the camera.

maybe I'm wrong

That's why there's a 2-second delay; so you can reposition the flash.

I agree, though, that it doesn't seem to be that useful. I'd just invest in a true remote trigger.

I have a chance to pick up a used 270exii (in excellent condition) for $120. I intend on using it for travel purposes when I don't want to bring my 580ii or when all I am looking for is extended filler flash. Anybody have any tips or experiences I should know about?

I took my 270EX II to a 2 month trip and left my 580EX I at home. No regrets. I put a small diffuser on in (actually, a cut-out semi-transparent film case) and shot away. It was very useful especially with the master ability of the 7D's build-in flash but occasionally the bounce ability was also useful.

Nevertheless, your needs/wants may be different than mine. It is very important that you are sure you will not need the 580's extra power e.g. bounce ability when the ceiling is high.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Gosh, the price had gone up! I paid $146 exactly a week ago.

Love the tilt head, high-speed sync capability, slave switch, and best of all ... it's very small and light i.e. extremely portable.

I sold my 220ex and replaced with 270ex II, best decision ever. Smaller and lighter, plus it has balance, slave, remote and telephoto flash. I use it more than my 580exII because it does the job when power is not needed.

I've got the 270EX.

I love it.

I use it in High Speed mode for daylight fill and every now and then for interiors with one of those Stofen diffussers on it.

I use disposable Lithium batteries in it.

Makes it light and recycle fast.

I had a 580 EX II, but sold it.
I much prefer the 270.

The MK II looks cool.
