p.1 #1 · Weird 5D LCD screen problem

So I pick up another 5Dc (used) and about the third time I use it I look at the LCD screen on the back to see the picture I took looking like I used infrared film or something. I download the pictures and they look fine, nothing wrong with the file, etc. I check the card again and then the photos look OK--after a few seconds they go back to infrared. I then apply a little bit of pressure on the corner of the screen with my thumb and it changes it back to the infrared look. I realize I can actually switch between "normal" and "infrared" by pressing on the LCD screen. Is this a screen going bad? Needs to be replaced? Anyone ever experience something like this before? I just got the camera back from Canon after sending it in for the mirror fix.

Sounds like a dodgy connection.

One of my 5D bodies sometimes has a very 'posterized' image display on the LCD. I suspect this what you're describing as IR or something. This body has twice experienced a severe rain soaking, so severe that it stopped working, both times. The first timne was about four years ago. After a few days drying, it was fine for a few months, and then the shutter button died, due to corrosion. The most recent time was last summer. During the rain event, AF stopped working, but it was fine again after a few days on the sidelines. OTOH, it started this posterizing display thing. As for you, the downloaded images were just fine, but the LCD display was flaky. This 5D now has a backup role, and it's in full time use by my daughter.

+1

The screen is connected with a ribbon cable. Perhaps the cable is a bit loose, or there is a broken solder connection or something along those lines.

had the same thing happen to me during a wedding, and I freaked out because I thought it was the actual files messing up... turns out it was the connection, I sent it into canon and got it fixed.

Had this on both my 5D's, sent one in for repair, they replaced the screen, on the other it doesn't happen often and a firm tap on the screen fixes it so I haven't bothered sending it in. In both cases it started straight after shooting in the rain.

It should be only 7 screws.
