So how much have you used the Zeiss lens then? A lot I suppose because you comment about this lens in every thread here

Regardless of whether or not I've used or owned the lens I can see the results for what they really are (from three separate sources)--apparently you cannot.

Voigtlander APO 125 F2.5 (Lanthar) is the best of the macro (and short telephoto) bunch (Canon 100; Zeiss 100 and even the Leica macro). However the Voigtlander (really a Cosina lens) has no AF and no IS - it does have 9 aperture blades and an approx 720 degree focus turn (for very precise focus at macro range).

It was available in Canon mount (have a copy myself). About 1200 copies made; more were made in Nikon mount with aperture ring (can be adapted to Canon), and Pentax mount, Minolta mount, etc.

It is rude to deride people like denoir/luka/akul as unenlightened shills simply because they are enjoying the Zeiss brand and enthusiastically sharing their results. Everyone is welcome to take all these views and images with a grain of salt, including, and maybe especially, mine.

The truth is the truth--it is not rude to state a fact based on observed behavior, no matter how unpleasant it may sound. Some time ago, someone did a test of several fast 50mm primes, including the Zeiss 50/1.4 Planar, and the result was not favorable for this lens. But he just kept making excuses for the softness and low contrast, saying this is what a portrait-optimized lens is supposed to look like at close subject distances. Then he claimed it would be super sharp at infinity focus, when the other lenses wouldn't be. If it had been any other

Yes I agree that the Zeiss Planar 50/1,4 is not good wide open or close to that. But that lens has nothing to do with the 100 MP lens

Lars, I was specifically addressing the statement that I was being "rude" for claiming that certain people appear incapable of saying anything negative about a Zeiss lens, because they find ways to rationalize their biases; and that such opinions cannot be considered credible. And I cited that specific example of the 50mm tests as a counterargument, because it is not rude to state a fact, however unpleasant it may be to hear it. Read the quoted discussion again.

It's worthwhile to note that after all this time, I have zero problems with people who like Samyang, Sigma, Olympus, Minolta, Yashica, Nikon, or Pentax lenses. By a large margin, it is only the Zeiss and Leica fans that are so damned pushy about their love of these lenses, and as I alluded to previously, the closest parallel that comes to mind is religious fanaticism, like they belong to some weird sort of lens cult. Yes, they're very nice lenses. But they're not as great as their proponents want to believe they are, and when other lenses offer more for less, they jump through hoops to try to prove that their beloved brands are superior by picking apart the tiniest flaws in the competition, and barring that, they appeal to vague, subjective, and untestable claims. I feel like every time I hear grandiose claims of "microcontrast," "rendering," and "drawing style," I'm being proselytized to. And they way they are so relentlessly selective about seeing what they want to see and ignoring what they don't, is just like those nutcases who thought the Rapture was going to happen last Saturday.

Calling people who don't happen to agree with you "religious fanatics" and "nutcases" is a really positive, friendly and productive attitude, wickerprints.

It's no less friendly than the way the Zeiss and Leica fanboys treat those who don't agree with them. There's no forum rule that states that I have to be "friendly" about something I believe is a lot of pretentious hogwash. What are you going to do about it?

I haven't seen you being called anything remotely like this, but maybe I was being relentlessly selective in what I wanted to see. By the way, the Rapture was incredible. I looked for you everywhere among the Chosen, but couldn't find you. Unfortunately, Zeiss lenses were specifically excluded for the purpose of picture taking, so I can't post how grandiose it actually was...

I just checked the ZE 100 price (new)......with shipping and sales taxes it would come to about $2,200. Unfortunately, I can't possibly justify that sort of a purchase given all other lenses I have in that application range, although I'd be curious to give the lens a fair shake.

You're entitled to your opinion. Personally, I find wickerprints to be a rational breath of fresh air around this place. His posts are intelligent and it's obvious from reading him over a long period of time that he knows what he is talking about.

And that's especially true when it comes to the alt lens fanboi-ism. I've watched this phenomenon in its various forms on this forum for many years.. heck, I even got drawn in by the hype myself at one point. I've owned nearly all of the Contax Zeiss lenses (and still have a few I haven't bothered to sell off yet). I saw the hype first-hand, and worse, the shilling by people who had a financial interest in playing up these lenses. I've done direct tests between Zeiss and Canon lenses, I've read many reviews and comparisons, and I've witnessed the exact double standards that wickerprints is talking about in this thread: the situational evaluations, the "flaws" that become "character traits" on the alt lenses, the "3D look" bullsquat, and so forth.

There's nothing wrong with liking Zeiss lenses or any other type of hardware. But the preference should be based on reality, and with a nod towards not just the strengths but also the weaknesses of a choice. There's a difference between a fan and a fanboi, and while it's hard to express in words, it's not difficult to notice when you see it.

Charlesk, I agree that a good discussion between the merits of various lens is good...but when the discussions become personalized and fanboys from either side jump in, things do become somewhat embarrising. For example, the following quote from a wickerprints crosses the logical line and turns discussions into pissing matches.

"It's no less friendly than the way the Zeiss and Leica fanboys treat those who don't agree with them. There's no forum rule that states that I have to be "friendly" about something I believe is a lot of pretentious hogwash. What are you going to do about it?"

Well, yes, that comment was somewhat confrontational. I guess I just understand his frustration... especially when the alt lens bullcrap is foisted on us here in the Canon forum. You've been around long enough to know that the alt lens forum was created in large part to defuse these arguments and give the alt lens fans a place to discuss their "3D look microcontrasty painterly" lenses without big fights breaking out.

At the same time, many of them can't help but continuing to bring their zeal here onto the Canon forum. It does come across as elitist and almost religiously preachy, to be honest -- like Christians who can't just be happy loving their Jesus but have to tell everyone else that they need to as well, some of the people who love these lenses can't just be happy using the gear, they have to prove that it's better or try to win converts. After a while, it grates on the nerves. The fact that it is mostly irrational just reinforces the problem.

I think there is too much hostile adjective slapping and judgement passing in this thread.

Some of us would like to see more ZE 100 shots and less verbosity.

Although I haven't always agreed with wickerprints in the past, and he can get worked up and abrasive when confronted about his views - his comments are always rational, objective and logical.

In this thread, it just looks like he presented some conclusions based on his interpretations, and then was accused by a number of posters of holding some secret agenda, and who then ambushed him again when he responded in kind.

Agree,

When a Canon lens is shown to be sharper to be a Zeiss, the Zeiss is more "3D looking" or "has more pop"

When a Canon lens renders cooler than a Zeiss, the Zeiss is more "rich and saturated"

When a Canon lens renders warmer than a Zeiss, the Zeiss is more "natural looking and neutral"

When a Canon lens shows more contrast than a Zeiss, the Zeiss is "more balanced and delicate looking"

When a Canon lens shows less contrast than a Zeiss, the Zeiss is "more punchy" "has a 3D look"

It is a very real phenomenon.

And I am guilty of it myself when discussing things like FF vs Crop and L vs non L. But I know that I am not being objective in those debates and cling to some false sense of romanticism to know that the same happens for Canon vs Zeiss

In my opinion Canon's best macro lens offering is the 180L, although I admit I haven't tried all of Canon's current macro lenses. But I'm VERY impressed with the color, contrast, bokeh and sharpness of the 180L.

How does the Zeiss compare with the 180L? (other than the FL difference of course)

lol @ all of this meaningless banter.

A 10 year old, $500 Canon 100/2.8 all but matches this $1850 Zeiss in optical performance. What you are paying for in that additional $1300+ certainly isn't optical performance. Build quality? Zeiss cachet? Anything else? I'm at a loss here.

Not worth it IMO. I'm sure the couple hundred people who will actually buy one will think differently though.

Wow! With all the vitriol flying, I'd think I walked into a Nikon forum!

I agree with chez, we should keep this more friendly and fact-based. PetCal is right too -- let's see more photos and discussions of the results and handling of the lenses.

And enough with the massive generalities of "Alt users say. . ." and "Canon users say. . ." We might instead notice that we are Canon users with Canon and Alt lenses. It's not "us and them".

I have not tried the ZE 100 but I can definitely say that the CV APO Lanthar 125 is a kick-ass lens with amazing color, bokeh and sharpness. I had one with the Canon mount and focus confirmation chip which helps a great deal. I sold it when I got the 100L. I was willing to give up the IQ edge it has over the 100L for the convenience and speed of AF ... and IS.

I would love to give the CV APO Lanthar 125 a whirl but certainly not at the absurd prices that people are asking for that lens these days.

And yes, more civility would be great but I completely understand 'wickerprints' frustration.
