p.1 #1 · First Outing - Zeiss 28mm F2.8 + A850 (HDR)

It was a nice day today so I decided to go for a long walk starting from Union Square to the Brooklyn Bridge.

I have a lot of learning to do in learning how to shoot completely manually again. Its how I started when I first started shooting film in highschool but somehow a skill I've forgotten. Thankfully the A850 is actually pretty ergonomically great if not the user.

I currently have the manual focus screen installed but I'm pondering switching it out to the normal because it's just a bit too dark at F5.6.

I first wanted to start out by posting samples that did not have any post editing besides straightening, white balance, and a tiny bit of exposure compensation. Its truly amazing how the out of camera results when I nail it correctly can be almost disturbingly sharp. First I thought I was seeing aliasing errors jaggies from Lightroom but amazingly it was actually just that sharp and those were real world jaggies on some of the bridge cables.

Anyways, finally seeing some of that "Pop" I was hoping for.

Here's the slideshow:

And some HDR mixed with normal ones I edited a bit.

Dig 'em. Like the bokeh in the 1st.

I love my Distagon 28/2.8 and your shots show very well why.

If I were you I'd keep the M focusing screen. You can just focus wide open and only stop down when you're taking the shot.

Some fine ones in there, and the Sony sensor must take some credit as well for the clean look, even when approaching the edge of the colour gamut. I much prefer the less saturated and the bokeh-free ones - did you change colour modes?

Mine produces a little CA at extreme corners but it takes quite some provocation to see it.

People don't like hearing it, but this Distagon beats the 21mm in the image centre at f5.6 overall, which really sets up many or most images very nicely with the curving 3D effect away from centre. The tan and sag lines stay parallel to produce a consistent fall off of object shaping off axis, and the lines at least fall away at a consistent rate. And see how few of these images require really good corner definition?

I use the stock screen and have no trouble whatsoever. Same method as AhamB says above, with the new firmware in A mode. The A850/900 series are excellent ergonomically, the camera just gets out of the way...and is as light as a Nikon D300s.

He ended up with a primo copy of this lens. The corners are pretty damn sharp by 5.6 and in order to get it to demonstrate any CA, it requires some really severe, torture test like backlighting (which we may be seeing in the next to the last bridge shot). An earlier copy I once had did not perform quite at this level so I know there is sample variation with this lens.

Too many pics for me to comment on each one, Jaeyoon, but overall, a very strong set.
The bridge shots are spectacular!

Thanks guys.

Are these two showing Pop or is it moreso just the blurred background?
