p.4 #1 · Canon 7D shutter count - impossible?

Interesting thread, even if I don't have a 7d. Just want to make things a little easier for some of you that might want to try Ubuntu.

You can always run from the "live CD" which is the easiest, but an impermanent, way to go. If you want to be a little more sophisticated, as long as your PC will boot from a USB device (not all will) you can install Ubutntu on a USB drive (4GB is the smallest I'd attempt) as discussed. Another option if you have an old unused external hard drive laying around, install Ubuntu on that. I've tried them all, but the external drive is superior for my uses.

I had an old 80GB IDE drive that I was going to junk but I deiced to use it for Linux - it works great. I have enough space to save files, I can access my regular hard drives, NAS drives, etc. all without creating a dual boot option, and in effect it's a self contained and portable computer. It will work on any USB hard drive, so if you want to load it on a 2.5" portable drive, you can put it in your pocket (albeit, it's larger than a flash drive).

Hi everyone - I've almost got this working but stuck on the last step! Ubuntu booted from USB fine, gtkam running, 7D recognized, right click for camera preferences ... but then I don't see where it lists the shutter count! Which tab is it under? Seems like it must be right in front of my face but I can't see it ...

Awesome - thanks Steve, I see it now. I was on a netbook with a small screen and didn't realize you could scroll down on that tab. Now I know my refurb 7D via Canon Loyalty Program had 266 shots previously taken. Not bad!

I searched almost everywhere on the web, found no viable way to accurately verify the shutter count for Canon 7D.

Does anyone have a good idea how?

Thanks for your advice.

Steve

I keep track of mine with the file count. It resets after 9999

Someone help!

I made a bootable CD, booted from it and had Ubuntu installed. But after I restarted my PC in Ubuntu, the darn thing asked me to "login" with password!

Please help me to get over this. Thanks for your help.

The default password should be blank. Just hit enter

You don't really have to install Ubuntu onto your PC. Just load it straight from the CD; i.e., LiveCD.
