Trapped a hoverfly (Epistrophe elegans) in the kitchen yesterday and gave it some sugar/honey water to feed on so i could photograph it (#1).
It stopped feeding and moved a bit and then decided to have a wash and brushup so I continued to photograph it. I was then puzzled by a facial opening that appeared and disappeared (#2,#3 and animation). Had not noticed this when it was actually feeding. and not noticed this at all on any hoverfly before.
Certainly never noticed this before and wonder if it's just a developmental error where the face was not properly sealed and is being opened by certain proboscis movements?
