Anybody know of a good lp-e8 replacement battery? I see one on BHphoto called pearstone that seems to get good reviews and is half the price of the Canon. Would like to hear about some reputable, cheaper, possibly better alternatives to the Canon battery. Thanks.

Do you have any direct experience with this company or battery performance?

A quick search on here for sterlingtek will reveal all you want to know about them.
As for the battery in question is it a 'Dumb' battery (like all the previous Batteries before the 5D2 came out) or is it a 'Chipped' one like the Lp-E6?

I've been using ST batteries since 2004 and most have lasted longer than my Canon batteries. I just got a LP-E6 for my 5D2 a couple months back and so far so good. Even has the little chip thingie.

What is the difference between being chipped and not?

Means the camera can register it for all sorts of fun reasons

(i.e. it makes them unnecessarily more expensive and difficult to copy)

So in actual use, nothing right? The sterling tek is looking more and more attractive.

Well first find out if the LP-E8 is a smart chipped battery. (I think its not from a little bit of looking around, but...)

The LP-E6 as used in the 5D2/7D/60D has a chip in it (which is why its a smart battery). From this the camera gives you a much better idea of power remaining (my 40D's power meter basicly says fully charged - 1/3rd full - dead) .
the camera will also tell you how many shots a particular battery has done.

But the downside is you have to have the chipped battery for any power info so in normal use you have no idea if your on your last shot .And you cant charge a 'Dumb' battery in a canon charger. you can buy dumb batteries for the above cameras very cheap on ebay (and other places) but they need to come with a charger.
There are 3rd party 'smart' batteries around (sterlintek have started to do them) but you do pay extra (in some cases in the past they have been close to the cost of a genuine one)

Bottom line is if you camera takes smart the use smart.

Hope that helps.

I dont think you will have a problem. Looking into it a bit more it looks like the battery/camera system is a 'dumb' one.

AFAIK the LP-E8 does not have a chip

Are sterlingtek available in the UK (without a big shipping fee)?

I dont think so . But just had a look at their site and international shipping looks like it would be $9.99 which is only a little bit more than their standard shipping cost.
