p.1 #1 · 1D MkIII & Softball

I've recently shot a number of softball games with a 1D mkIII and found that 60-70% of my shots are back focused. I sent the camera and lens, a 70-200, to Canon about two months ago and it was serviced and calibrated.

Question is, any 1d Mark III shooters care to share their custom function settings with me? I want to research this a bit before sending it back to Canon. Thanks in advance.

This is the pdf that I used to help figure out some of the CF III settings on my 1D3.

I have one of the earlier MK III's and have had the camera back twice. Once just before Christmas of 2007 to have the first focus issue fixed and then again in November of 2008 along with my 70-200 2.8L IS. They blamed my focus issue on a UV haze filter and apparently still tweaked the lens and/or the camera's focus and charged me $190.08. There were two more service notices on the camera in March of 2009 again for focus problems:

Dear Eric,

Thank you for using Canon products.

Please be advised of two important Service Notices and a firmware update for the EOS 1D Mark III and EOS 1Ds Mark III digital SLR cameras.

1. We have learned that some EOS 1D Mark III and EOS 1Ds Mark III digital SLR cameras have a problem in the accuracy of the AF (auto-focusing). If an AF point other than the center AF point is used, focus may become soft. For more details, please click here.

and another in April of 2009:

My camera didn't really show any symptoms that were described in these two notices so I didn't pay much attention. I also did not shoot much at all for over a year as I wound down my first career. Focusing on photography now, I have noticed more focusing issues so proceeded to do my best do tweak the AF micro adjustment for my lenses.

Long story short, the 70-200 2.8L IS needed a slight minus 5 to tweak it. Both my 24-70 2.8L and and 85 1.2L Mk I needed plus 16 and plus 20 respectively. So, I wonder if they did something back in 2008 to match the body and 70-200 and now my other lenses are way off?

Sorry about the windy post.

Thanks for the responses. I have made some changes, -5 focus adjustment. I will shoot it soon and see how it does.

Check out this Fred Miranda post which has images from a soccer game shot mid day.

I called Canon about my issue and they said to send in the camera again. When I asked if I should send my lenses too, he said that I should do the camera first and see if the lenses are still the same.

Just a follow up, I called CPS and a rep guided me through adjusting -10 micro adjust focus. Shot a game yesterday and my rate of keepers was up substantially. Enough that I believe I'm satisfied.

So are you saying you didn't know about the micro adjustment feature before you sent your camera and lens to Canon service?

I sent the camera body and lens in about two months ago. The 70-200 had totally quit focusing. It was when I got the camera back and noticed that the focus problem that I started studying the issue and found out about the micro adjustment. I really didn't think the micro adjustment would make that big a difference and when I spoke with the rep I decided to give it a go and it seems to have made a pretty substantial difference. The rep suggested a -2 so I went a -5 and -10. The -10 seems to have been the best.

The reason I ask is because numbers like -10 MA do make a huge difference and I just wonder how many other togs out there go through frustrating times never trying MA? If they were to visit a forum like this they would soon find out about MA, but what about those that try to fix everything themselves? Not that any of us are that way
