p.1 #1 · Canon T3i and SD card question

OK - so just picked up a T3i for my wife and my initial research shows that for hi def video a class 10 card is the best - and we are looking at a SanDisk Extreme 3 card. But it seems that the spec on class 6 cards also mention that they are suitable for video. Question is - can I get away with a good class 6 card or should I just ante up and get the SanDisk Extreme 3. Thanks in advance.

Check out the Transcend class 10 cards @ B&H, like $52 for the 32gb

p.1 #3 · Canon T3i and SD card question

I'm sorry, but (and I will probably get ran off the forum for this ) memory is memory. Pretty much any brand will be reliable. Get what you think you must have but also pick up a cheap class 10 card. I have bought tons and NEVER had an issue with any ( other than a Seagate microdrive). Don't waste money on expensive brand name cards. I just picked up 2 Kingston 16GB class 10 SD cards from FRYS electronics (they are also on the net) for $25 ea. Memory is not one of the things to waste money on esp. since you always have back-up (never needed it for failure reasons ). Rick

p.1 #4 · Canon T3i and SD card question

Hello Rick. Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm asking because it seems as if there are so many different stories out there. I,m hearing about class 10 cards not really being class 10, and it seems that some brands have higher failure rates. I happen to win a lower end SD card and was generally happy with it - but it fell apart after 3 weeks of hardly any use. It would be nice to know that I could confidently move to a Transend at half the price of a Sandisk and have the same reliability.

+1 for Transcend. They're reasonably priced and I haven't had any problems using them.

dragonfly5 - I've had good success with Transcend, as well as half a dozen others. Transcend seems to have a lot of support on the forum, and if that will help you have more confidence in it - might be a good buy. Class 6 is the min. recommended class for video, so you should be OK. Rick

Pg 154 of the manual suggests a card that will record 8 mb/sec.

These are the ratings of all currently available cards:[13][23]

Class 2, 2 MB/s
Class 4, 4 MB/s
Class 6, 6 MB/s
Class 10, 10 MB/s

That should answer the question.

Higher failure rates? Good luck finding anything to back that one up. Sandisk offers a very good warranty, but they cover their costs by charging a hefty premium over other brands.

The only card that failed me was Lexar, and I killed that one.

Thanks for all the replies. I picked up a Class 10 Transend today and will try that. Critical video with the new T3i isn't going to happen for awhile so I'll have plenty of time to test and get comfortable as I can.

No problem shooting 60D HD video with class 6 Transcend SD. Can't tell any performance diff between it and my class 10 Transcend SD. Class 4 is only good for a few seconds of HD video but is fine for stills or low rez video.
