p.1 #1 · Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L II adapted on R6 - image quality?

Hey all,
I recently bought a pre-owned EF 70-200 f/2.8L II for my EOS R6 with a Canon EF-RF adapter. Shooting wide open @ f/2.8, Av mode, the results are less than impressive. I shot these jpg to keep it simple; no other editing has been done. As I stopped down, IQ got progressively better but still, this is not what I expected.

Are my results typical of EF "L" glass being adapted onto an RF body?

Here's the 2 jpgs of some overgrowth over my back fence at 70mm and 200mm.
70mm f/2.8, 1/1600, ISO 100
200mm f/2.8, 1/1250, ISO 100

The Mark II EF lenses should perform the same if not better when adapted to an RF body.
Your images aren't very telling due to the harsh midday sun, possible atmospherics and potential wind movement might be at play there. I suggest a more controlled IQ testing to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Thank you. I edited my post. 70mm @ 1/1600 SS, 200mm @ 1/1250 SS - both ISO 100, Av mode. Not even a hint of a breeze and it's only in the 90's right now.

I have that combo. As stated above, the body and adapter aren't an issue. That lens can be a touch soft wide open, but it hits max sharpness if you stop down just a little. You may want to look up some in-depth reviews on the lens to see how their results compare to yours.

"Only" 90's. lol. That's hot.

Yeah I was watching a ton of YouTube reviews and almost all said the mk II was noticeably sharper than the mk I so I went with the mk II. Even so, those that reviewed the lens adapted had nothing but good things to say.

I recently sold my Sigma 150-600 to step up to L glass but from what I’ve seen in these handful of shots, the Sigma was sharper. I’ll have to take it to the park or something to get a better feel for the lens.

Yeah, in Houston it’s been getting up to 103°-108° all summer long. The 90’s is a welcome cold front!

If you have a better subject to shoot and you don't see tack sharp results wide open then yes it could be your lens. I've owned all of them and the vII is very sharp. In fact I need to sell one so I will try to pull it out and take some test shots for reference.

Burr only in the 90's! We're having a nice cold front ourselves and only hitting 93° right now.

I think you're doing the right thing by taking it out and shooting it more to get a better feel.
Keep in mind that atmospheric distortion can happen regardless of ambient temps. Some of the worst I've ever seen (photographed) was in the dead of winter in below freezing temps.

The EF IS v2 is better than the IS v1, but IMO, both RF versions are sharper than the EFs. I know it's a potentially large price difference but maybe rent one to see what you think.

I had a look the example images. There is a problem with the lens and it needs servicing by Canon. You should not get that 'smearing' happening towards the periphery.

Maybe a year or so ago someone else posted here about having problems photographing high school sports, IIRC, with the v2 adapted to the R system. I think he had similar problems and sent it to Canon. It improved, but still wasn't perfect.

First step would be to contact the seller about returning. The thing with servicing, is it will be improved, but it might not be as good as new.

I tried the V3 on my R6. The V3 and V2 are the same optical formula, except some coating changes. And the IQ of these lenses on average is close to the RF 70-200 2.8. All my other EF lenses work as good or better, so no specific issue with adapting. Sounds like maybe your lens needs adjustment. Maybe was dropped?

I got a second handed a bad copy of this lens and sold it soon after. Also there’s a YouTuber making comparisons that also had a bad copy that was worse than the first non-is version and the tamron.
