Here's one from the Sigma at f1.4 that I didn't try with the L (edit: it was for testing AF) (again 100% crop):
http://photos.imageevent.com/bhakti_rider/miscelaneousstuff/sigma85f14vs85lii/CA%20on%20tree%20trunk.JPG

I also did maybe 8 or 10 shots with the Sigma to check AF accuracy, and this one was a bit front focused; the rest were spot on (another 100% crop, center AF point was on the grayish-white shape just above the center):
http://photos.imageevent.com/bhakti_rider/miscelaneousstuff/sigma85f14vs85lii/front%20focus.JPG
And here's one that shows amazing AF accuracy. I didn't even notice the little growing grass leaves, but it (edit: well, it and the camera!) caught them (also 100% crop, center AF point on the dried tree leaf):

In the next few days, I'll do some more printed-page-taped-to-the-wall shots and show 100% crops from the center and corners. I don't have time now.

Interesting to see.

The lens looks good even after 3 tests with the 85 L

I give a draw so far, the first test went to the L second I think it was a bit better for the Sigma and this last one I just cannot tell much difference.

Fun to see some comparing between those 2 lenses.
But in this 1 the focus is behind the subject that is cropped, with this its hard to judge which one is better. Crop the grass behind your subject and then i would like to see which is sharper.

I love my L lens but really like to see how good the sigma is.

cheers
Chris

Chris - this was just to show CA. I'm going to do a paper-taped-to-the-wall thing in the next few days and show 100% crops from the center and corners. That will be the sharpness comparison.

Good news for the Sigma. The differences overall so far are very minute.

After reading these three tests, I believe that S85 is going to make a big shot in sales, with incredible IQ but reasonable price.

Interesting that the 85L have onion effect from f/2.0 while S85 doesn't have it.

Thanks for this test of Longitudinal CA (bokeh fringing) and purple fringing! Some inital samples from the sigma seen before showed rather hefty amounts of LoCA, but it is really no worse than the 85L II.

Thanks for the test, from what I can see, f/1.8 and up the Sigma is a tiny little better in CA. AF accuracy of only 1 out of 8~10 shots OOF is extremely good, certainly better than my 2nd copy 85L2(70~80% accuracy) and MUCH better than my 1st copy 85L2 (50~60%). On top of that, the Sigma has faster AF to boot, looks like this sigma gets a lot of bang for the buck, looking good so far.

My hope is that the Sigma 85 focuses better than the Sigma 50mm F1.4. I love the 85L but its slow when focusing. Thanks for posting those samples!

The Sigma does have it, it just appears a bit less prevalent. In fact, from what we've seen so far, IQ characteristics are extremely similar although the lens design is very different.

Interesting, the Canon design looks like it's based on the classic double Gaussian design used in most 50mm and 85mm lenses, but the Sigma is a much different design, more classic telephoto I think.
