p.1 #1 · No codec for Canon RAW on Windows 7 64 bit!

I am traveling with a new laptop, and realized that I could not view my RAW files in Windows Explorer. No problem I thought, I went to their web site but couldn't find the download. So I e-mailed them, and here is the response:

"Dear Mr. Stephens:

Thank you for your reply regarding your EOS 5D.

We are sorry to inform you that we do not offer a RAW codec for the 64
bit editions of Windows 7. There is only a codec for the 32 bit edition
of Windows 7.

We apologize for this inconvenience. Please write to us again if you
have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Erik
Technical Support Representative"

I am incredulous. How could they not support both versions of Windows 7? If I was running Windows 95 I would be OK. What is going on here?

How about from the Canon site? http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_5d#DriversAndSoftware

Select Win7 in the drop down. It shows this:
rc170upd_7l.exe
Canon RAW Codec 1.7.0

Only works for x32, I tried the same thing and had the same problem. As long as its been out, I don't know why they aren't supporting it by now.

There is other software that will do it, but people have been after Canon for a long time to no avail. The boss probably uses a Mac.

Use" K-lite codec pack" (someone in this FM site posted awhile back) for Window it works for Canon RAW (even a newest RAW from Canon S95), Nikon NEF, Olypus ORF etc... I've used it on XP and Window 7 64bits.

Get yourself a copy of Breezebrowser Pro. Brilliant software at a very cheap price

I use Faststone Image Viewer, it's free (for home users).

K-lite codec pack is utter crap. Do NOT install it. If you're looking for one or two things to install, install those separately. If K-lite will list everything it installs and you can pick and choose what you need or want.

Darn. I thought that "upgrading" to Windows 7-64 would allow me to see my 5DII RAW files in Windows Explorer. At the moment, my o/s is XP and I have to shoot both RAW and a small jpeg to allow me to see my files in W/E. As all my folders since 2002 have been in Windows, I really don't want to change to another system now!

BS it's crap. I got the K-Lite codec pack a long while ago. IIRC you got the choice of basic, normal or advanced, each with more of codecs and tools. You also have the full control on what to install if you use the CUSTOM INSTALL instead of the automatic one. This is PC we're talking about, not MAC.

I also prefer the Media Player Classic that it comes with over Windows Media Player. That said, I have no idea it supports RAW. I can't see my 450D/7D thumbnails in Explorer.

I bought one and it's great! SOOO Fast for showing thumbnails in whole directory, was worth the cost.

If you want full control of what you install, install those programs separately. K-Lite has caused problems with many people I've known because it just installs a ton of crap all at once which can easily lead to conflict. It doesn't matter if it's full or light, as it only takes one program to wreak havoc. I've encountered many people who have random glitches and problems with running video and audio due to having installed K-lite. One, if not many, codecs will conflict or start producing undesirable results. If you need an all-in-one audio/video codec, download FFDshow. If you need something specific, get that specific codec.

I downloaded the FastStone Image program and it worked great! It still bugs me that Canon doesn't provide this.

I realize it's not the same, but this is what I use for a shortcut in windows vista 64-bit. It works for thumbnails at least. Give it a try it just might work. C:\Windows\SysWOW64\explorer.exe /separate, ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

I like threads like this... just in case I ever need to remind myself why I switched to Mac.
