Saw a nice crescent moon rising this morning. 300mm is fun with a longer exposure.

To the important business of this board (encouraging me to spend money…) has anyone directly compared the S mount 3.5cm f/2.5 vs f/1.8? That one on the board keeps calling me. I’m not dissatisfied with the f/2.5 but faster is faster… thinking about an upgrade.

I love butterflies. If only they didn't start as crawly caterpillars.

F2 Photomic, so sad

As I've posted before, some months ago a friend Jim R. gave me some lenses and two bodies, an F and F2. I've used the F. It's okay but doesn't feel as ergonomic as my Nikkormat FTn. It has features I will never need. The F2 needed light seals (he said) and had only a plain viewfinder from an F, so I haven't tried it yet. Well, after putting in new seals for the film door I found a good, not expensive, not perfect but usable F2 DP1 that claimed to have a functional meter (that's the whole point of course), picked up some batteries (they are different from those of the F), and tried it. Nuthin', nada, zippo. The battery check indicator didn't even work. (I checked the batteries manually out of the camera anyway.) So I checked the voltage between what appear to be the two points to carry voltage from the body to the Photomic meter. Nuthin', nada, zippo. Meter switch on or off, made no difference. It appears that the camera body is not routing battery voltage to the meter.

The positive battery voltage goes directly to the camera body. That's easy to test. I checked the continuity from the negative contact in the battery cavity to the non-body terminal feeding the Photomic, got nuthin', i.e. infinite resistance. So it appears the battery voltage is stuck, never reaching the meter. Jim R had always used the camera with an external meter. Which means I have no idea how long that circuit has been busted.

How much trouble is it to take the F2 body apart? Or should I take it to a camera shop? Or should I just use it with an external meter? When I first started doing 35mm photography I had a Zenit B which had no meter. I missed a lot of shots, and still would 50 years later. Meters rule! Convenience rules!

This is all for fun anyway. I don't need the F2, or the F or Nikkormat for that matter, but it would be fun to have it functional.

Suggestions?
thanks? What would you do?

These are the questions everyone here wants to know. Therefore, I nominate you to purchase the missing f1.8 lens to compare and report back to the group what you think. You have our permission to spend whatever you think necessary. Can't wait for the results.
