p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tokina lenses and 10D

Hi,

Has anyone experience with compination Canon 10D and
- Tokina 24-200 3.5-5.6 AT-X 242AF
- Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 AT-X 270AF PRO II

How are they compared to Sigma lenses?

I might get those lenses about 160 eur (about same in dollars) for 24-200 and 240 eur for 28-70.

Thanks,
Tero

Hi,

I just bought one 24..200 last week in China for 200 USD. I like the make and
the range of the lens. I'm going to replace my 28..200 walkaround with it.

Up to know I have not shut enough to predict the pic quality.

Not the Tokina but if you do a search on PBase under cameras you can choose lenses. The Tamron 28-75 2.8 Xr Di has some great examples with the 10D. I just ordered it and going to try the lens. There is a review comparing it to the Canon 24-70L and the Tamron is dern close in quality but 1/4 the price. Yes if I had the choice I'd get the Canon but for $1300 it's just a little steep for me right now. The only problem with the Tamron's I understand is the possibility of getting a bad lens is higher than with the Canon.

Here how the Photozone site reivews the Tamron compared to the Canon:

f/2.8 Wide-angle zooms Optical Quality
Canon EF 2.8 24-70mm USM L 4.16 (3) = very-good
Canon EF 2.8 28-70mm USM L 4.15 (5) = very-good
Tamron AF 2.8 28-75mm LD XR Aspherical SP 4.14 (3) = very-good

Amazing quality (for the $$$). This could be utilized as your primary/walk around lens. Prime lenses could supplement as your needs dictate.

I know some of you now think my eyes need examining, but I thought I'd show you just one of the shots that I'm getting indoors with this camera at very nearly full aperture.

The following image is unaltered (not sharpened at all), and only resized to fit in this window. The original full image is underneath, converted to 100% JPG from RAW. Shot was at 70mm, f5.6. Full aperture is f4.5, I believe at that focal length.

Make sure to check out the full-size image. I don't get much better with many of my prime lenses. http://www.pbase.com/image/4337929/original

Hi,
this afternoon I did quick test shoots to compare my 28..200 canon and 24..200 tokina.
At F8.0 the tokina had less cromatic abberation, more DOF and definitly sharper pictures at 85, 135 and 200 mm than canon.
However at F5.6/200mm Canon seems to be sharper.
Furthermore the two lenses produces dfferent colors, canon seems to be brighter (?or saturated?). However I cannot tell which looks better.
Finally I decided that next week I will do some more controlled tests with an other 300D as well.

--------

Tero, if you need the hypezoom range then go with tokina. I fonund only the F5.6/200 problem (to be checked yet) all other issues are better than canon.
Even price is < 1/2 than canon.

I have the Tokina 2.6-2.8 ATX Pro and used it on a 10D with excellent results. I have since sold the 10D to make room for another 1D and a Canon 28-70 2.8L lens. the Tokina is now for sale.

Thanks very much for your kind advice!

I think I`ll try tokina if the price is low. Otherwise I`ll look for Tamron or Sigma. Canon L series is way too expensive for me. I already have sigma 70-200/2.8 EX and I`m very pleased with that.

I had the Tokina 24-200 ATX previously. It's a great travel or beginner lens - range is huge, focussing speed is good, contrast and sharpness on par with a normal Canon consumer zoom (which is to say not too shabby, considering how much bashing superzooms like the Tokina gets). Bokeh isn't too shabby too: http://www.galant-ho.com/summer03/butterflies/crw_2286.htm

The only dislike I had was the warm color cast which made it somewhat more difficult to get accurate skin tones. I sold it eventually to go the way of the Ls..
