No way I'd want to use one of those suckers - however one of the things they did right was to put the handle on top instead of trying to make a tall tripod foot double as a handle.

Had the chance to take a handful of photos with one of the first pre-production samples during a Sigma promotion activity. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to use my own camera nor to take samples with me. Shots were taken with a 5D.
What I could see from a couple of test shots is that it appeared to be well corrected for distortion (didn't do a brick wall test though). Sharpness was good even wide open. Zooming was horribly slow (I don't know whether this got improved in the meantime).
Sorry, that's all I remember. It's already 2 years ago. But I would prefer a set of Canon L primes with IS over this beast due to price and weight.

"Sigma... The Hernia HeavyŽ 200-500/f2.8".
Don't bother looking it up, it isn't really anyone's registered mark.
Has anyone played the nickname game with this lens yet? You know, Bigma, Sigmonster, etc... SURELY the nickname for this one needs to include a reference to personal injury.

I got to play with one of these at a photo fair. It was coupled with a 2x teleconverter, and the 1000mm focal length was quite impressive. There was a small display on the back of the lens(in front of the zoom ring) which showed current focal length and focus distance.
Both focus and zooming was controlled by motors inside the lens, and it felt really odd when the zooming/focusing trailed behind the actual turn of the ring. Focusing was really noisy and slow, I think Sigma needs to make a new version with HSM

the image, the lens, and the thread seems to show up every 6 months or so. i've touched but not shot with one. if it were around $10K i would have been in line for one.

You wouldn't want to use one? Really? I'd love to use one! I just wouldn't want to CARRY one!
