p.1 #1 · canon lens lock pin won't lock

I was switching lens on my Canon 1D Mark II and now my lens won't lock. Looked at the mount and I see that the lens lock pin is only flush and will not pop up. I tried pushing the lens release button serval times and pushed down on the pin itself but it still does not pop out.

Any suggestions?

(I had a 100-400 lens and switch to 70-200 when the problem occurred)

If you are comfortable (& qualified) to remove the lens mount flange, you can start poking around to see where the problem is, and order (or fix) any necessary parts.

However, if it's under warranty you should probably just send it to Canon. If not, a local qualified repair shop can probably fix it for less $$ than Canon.

Just got mine back from Canon for this exact issue on my MKIII. I don't have my paperwork in front of me, but apparently a lot of work went into repairing it as it was jammed and broken. I am a CPS member and Canon did not charge me anything. Definitely did not look like a home repair was possible based on the part list I saw that was done with mine.

I had the same problem w/ my MKIII. I called my pro rep in a panic..... He said take a small and I mean small (his words) drop of machine oil (sewing machine oil in the little squeeze bottle syringe thingy is what he recommended) on the pin. If the pin doesn't come back up, send it in (also his words....).

My pin popped up with no oil, I finished my shoot, went home and placed that "small" drop of oil on the pin and have never had another problem (one year later)since.

Hope this helps....

Thanks for the all help.

Does anyone know how long does it normally take to process an CPS membership application?

It's instant but takes 24 hours to get activated.

Here is how you get a small drop of oil: Dip the point a toothpick into the oil. What clings is a small drop. Touch the toothpick to the surface to transfer the oil to it.

Thanks orangefish,
I know I have the qualified equipment for CPS membership, but does it matter if I bought some of my equipment used? Do you know if used equipment qualifies too?

I had this issue on my MkII and the tech guy told me it was quite a big deal to replace.

I am also CPS but I got charged 60 pounds. Maybe I need to spend more on my kit to qualify for freebies

It doesn't matter over here. If you have the kit you're in no matter where you got it.

Wow, mine too (MarkIII). Canon Irvine fixed it though, no problem since. It was still under warranty because of the sub-mirror repair work.

There are other marks you are supposed to meet but it does not matter that your equipment was purchased used...

My little trip to Canon cost me $138.00 + shipping there. They told me it was a the pin that was bent. Good luck.

I've had the problem on my MkIIn. The first time I didn't realize that the lens was not on properly and it actually fell to the pavement as I tried to zoom. From then on I always make sure that my glass is secured. I thought that the problem was likely caused by some dust or dirt so used a rocket blower to try to clean it out and that seemed to help. Also tried "snapping" the lock mechanism by pushing the button down and letting it's spring push it back into the locked position several times without a lens in place. At least once the problem seemed to be cleared by twisting the lens into place rather forcefully, but now I am afraid that could cause damage. I'll try the small drop of oil.

Thanks for the ideas with this one - I found this thread when looking to fix a stuck lens lock pin on a Canon 50D (it was stuck down, so lenses wouldn't lock in place). Taking inspiration from the ideas here, I squirted some WD40 (lubricant here in the UK) into a dish, and used a cotton wool bud to dab the pin and the area around it. I then tapped the pin/area around the pin with the back of a precision screw driver and eventually it began to work loose and popped out. Once it was out, I swabbed the pin with further lubricant. Think I'll do this as part of regular maintenance, as I don't want to end up dropping a lens again! Thanks guys - long term problem solved

My 1DsIII disconnected from a 600L IS on a tripod and I was lucky to have the strap around my neck. Now I always wear the strap.
