Didn't realize you guys were in Raleigh as well. I need to call and release mine.. I didn;t realize it was a DX when I heard they were coming out - I just got so excited to have a fast/wide prime that I got them to hold one. No matter that it's the same as my 50 1.8 on a FF camera.

On another thread someone mentions that it works just fine on a FX, and there's just a little light falloff on the edges that you can crop out or fix with vignetting adjustments in post processing. So some wonder if it's really a pure DX lens at all as they can be used in FX format just fine. That's all I've heard, haven't tried it myself.

I don't mean to be rude, but read the post. I know you can turn auto crop off, but with auto crop off with the DX, you only get a little light falloff on the edges! If you crop in DX, no light falloff, but the 35 DX can actually shoot fairly well at FX sizes with a lot of usable area still.
Probably not optimal enough though for FX, but definitely usable if you like the 35mm range on full frame sensors.
Anyway, I don't have one, so I don't know first hand, but read the post I linked to. I'm not making any claims, but it looks like you can use the 35mm DX in FX without auto cropping, and have very little light falloff.

The vignetting varies according to the focus distance - like the 50G, vignetting grows stronger with longer focus distances. If Nikon had marketed this lens as FX, people would be absolutely up in arms - the performance is not nearly what anyone would expect from an FX lens. It's great that you can cheat a bit and get usable photos on FX, but that in no way should imply its not a "pure DX lens".

I'm not in any hurry. I have a trip in July I'd like a smaller body for, so I'll be waiting to see what Nikon introduces in the meantime and am also keeping an eye on Micro 4/3rds developments. We have a baby on the way, so getting something that can shoot video wouldn't be a bad thing. It wouldn't surprise me to see that in the D60's replacement.

Here's a little example.
35mm f/1.8G, f/1.8 cropped to DX
50mm f/1.4G, f/1.8 FX
Now obviously this comparison is a bit unfair since the DoF is so much more narrow on the FX setup, but here's the Nikkor at f/3.5 - stopped down enough to equalize the DoF and then some.
This confirms my fear from the DPReview examples - really not all that smooth in terms of bokeh. I certainly know which of the two setups I'd rather shoot with.

No one is arguing otherwise. Everyone knows how DX on FX works. I am simply letting Brian know the quick answer to his question about DX lenses on FX bodies. I don't understand the point you are trying to make.

Here's some shots at full rez, wide-open. This lens is definitely pretty impressive in terms of out-and-out sharpness and contrast wide-open. These are all bumped up a bit in terms of black levels, but just standard sharpening in ACR. Note that at these distances the vignetting really isn't that pronounced on a D700. And as long as there's not a lot going on in the background, the bokeh isn't terrible.
