p.1 #1 · G10

I know many of us are G7/G9 users ... well here is the new G10.

http://www.popphoto.com/photonews/5497/canon-powershot-g10-announced.html

Canon has today announced the Canon Powershot G10 (SRP: $499), a 14.7 megapixel luxe-class compact digital camera as the replacement to the popular G9. The G10, along with the other compact cameras announced today, is powered by the Digic 4 processor.

Key upgrades and features of the G10 include:

-True 5x zoom wide angle lens (28-140mm equivalent.)
--Face Detection can recognize profiles.

-14.7 megapixel capture

-RAW format files editable in Canon Digital Photo Pro (instead of ZoomBrowser/Imagebrowser like the G9)

-ISO up to 1600 with binned pixels lo-rez 3200 scene setting

-ISO dial now wraps around mode dial.

-Exposure Comp has own dial to left of the hotshoe (where the ISO dial was on the G9.)

The Canon Powershot G10 will be available in October 2008. Stay tuned to PopPhoto.com for a full test of this cool new compact camera.

I think I will hold unto my G9 for now... Maybe G9 second hand prices will be up as well after the G10 has been introduced

I like the 28mm wide angle. Canon seems to really listen to G users and grant us our top wish each year. I wish Popphoto had listed the lenses max aperture. Anyway 28-140mm works well for me. Exposure comp on a dial sounds like a nice feature. There has to be more to this new release. Maybe I will match my current G9 up with a Panasonic LX3.

Unless this thing produces stunning images at even ISO800, its not going in my bag. Cmon, 14.7mp? Give me 8 with better DR and IQ.

Probably very agressive noise reduction...

Stunning images at ISO800 ... what P&S are you currently using? As far as I know this does not exist. Good enough images at ISO400 is possible.

That pixel binning should be deployed aggressively. When I shoot faces in ordinary office lightning with G9 at ISO 200, I downrez the final images to 0.7 Mp to get them decent looking. Already with a 12 Mp sensor, it is equivalent to 4x4 binning.

I look forward to the Micro Four-Thirds cameras as my next briefcase camera after G9.

The only thing that i wish my G9 had that the G10 has is a wider angle lens (i'll buy the WA lens for the G) and the ability to view RAW files from the G9 in DPP. I am baffled as to why canon did this. Aren't all Canon RAW files CR2? Anyone know why DPP doesnt support G9 RAW fiiles? such a PITA to use various CANON software to view the RAW files. DPP is superior to Zoom browser (or whatever the program is)...

Also, i like how consumers/companies are so hung up on MPs. Seriously, a P&S doesnt need more than 8MPs. I mean a handful of P&S's have RAW, and how many people that have P&S's enlarge larger than 8x10? Most people who enlarge big use DSLRs.

I was worried becausei just bought a G9. I will not be upgrading

As a G9 user I am not too impressed with the upgrade. I usually shoot at wide angle on the more serious shoots (eg. landscapes) for which I always use a dSLR. Was also using the 140-200mm focal lengths frequently so 140mm seems a bit less... However, reduction from a 6x zoom to a 5x zoom seems interesting for we all know the lesser the magnification ratio, the better the lens (let's hope it's an f2 lens :-)

For existing G9 users, the pros:
1. 28mm
2. Better usability perhaps (with additional dials)
3. DPP support (Thank God no "Canon Raw Windows" format :-)

The cons:
1. 14.7 mp
2. 14.7 mp
3. 14.7 mp
4. Lesser zoom range

Anyhow, let's wait for the final specs...

So Canon excells in the Mpix race. Other than that it looks promising. Has anyone seen the camera yet?

I have a WA converter for the G9, but really don't use it--its heavy (and I have the Raynox smaller version) and largish. I also don't use DPP now--rather Lightroom and G9 files open nicely in LR.

However, all that being said---I really don't like to shoot with the G9 because of the LCD--though the pretty usable onscreen histo is quite nice--but do like its handling otherwise). For better or worse, I like a usable VF (and I've tried 2 external ones, but they are limiting) and I want the ability to shoot low light with higher ISO. So--I bought a used 400D and shoot with a 17-35 f/2.8-4 zoom and add my 50 f/1.4. This works as my 'small' cam (as opposed to my 5D)--and the 400D with either a 15 FE or 28 f/1.8 is quite small and light.

I know I won't upgrade to a 10---or even any other P & S in the future (and I know I don't want 14.5 MP).. The only one that has really interested me is the Sigma DP1---but its too limiting right now, so I'll bide my time.

Yikes, that is a scary website. Just kind of perused their "Best of 2008" article, really a waste of time... not to mention it read like they where yelling out all this information... Nasty.

I tip my hat to those out there capable of writing good articles. Probably never going to go to that website again....

The link only contained the text that I copied and pasted into the initial post. They probably got Canon's release schedule a littled messed up and released the info a little early.

Yeah. I was a forum member there years ago. There were never more than a handful of users online. When they updated their website with American Photo, I left. FM is the awesome!
