Got an interesting call from Hawaii today from a good friend at the Canon dealer meeting. Seems the 50D is going to come in a kit form with an 18-200 IS. We didn't discuss the camera much as he was mentioning several other new cameras (all P&S), but he did specifically mention his disappointment in the fact Canon is waiting until the show for the new 5D.
So your saying a 50D and 5D are coming for Photokina in 6 weeks? I'd be amazed if they replaced the 40D after a mere 12 months and many won't like what that'll do to the value of their 40D, so soon.
OMG... I have been waiting for the 5D Mk II for SO long, and now a 50D, too. But I'd rather they use the new 12.2 MP sensor from the XSi and imporive it, ala XTi / 40D. 15MP on a APS-C sensor seems a bit much? Even F8 would see some lens defraction softning? I like the fact that F16 is usable on the 12.8 MP FF 5D sensor. Any thoughts? (hopfully just rumours)

yes Hammerli is correct is going to be a 50D kit with the 18-200 lens, expect 15 MP, ISO 3200, face detection, HD lcd, 6.5 FPS, improve AF
Wow, what a crappy combination for IQ! You'd expect that on the Rebel.

Maybe those that like kit lenses aren't pixel peepers and for everyday use the results will be plenty good enough for most people IMO, especially since most don't print larger than 4x6 anyway.

And for that they need 15MP and blur-o-vision noise reduction

It's all about the specs for a lot of people. I see plenty of good camera with cheapo lenses on them. Anyway, seeing how the Sigma 18-200 OS does, the Canon version might be pretty decent.
Face Detection?! the money they invest in developing these should've gone to getting their QC right or higher iso performance or something. don't tell me the 50D can capture video too..
if they really had a dealer meeting we would have a LOT of talk going on about the specs, pictures would be on the web and things would be happening. Everyone knows that a dealer announcement is far from top secret. once the dealer knows the consumer knows.
So, a "good" friend called you today from the Canon dealer meeting, and he felt more compelled to talk to you about future P&S cameras instead of new SLRs?

Hmmm...
Reports of our friendship are greatly exaggerated!
I love it! No-one really "knows" yet what the new Canon camera or cameras will do, but already critics pounce, stating that they will jump ship.
C'mon guys, if this advance info is correct (a big if IMHO, I am with NH on this), it is good news for Canon shooters, who will have more and better choices, and for others who will get lower prices on the back of increased Canon competitive pressure.
