Before I go ahead and scratch the rear element of my brand spanking new Nikkor 50/1.2, I better ask..... will it work on the 5D or will the rear element make contact with the camera body or mirror at infinity focus? Mirror is not shaved.
It looks like I may have to cut off a protection tab on the lens to clear the mirror.
I've done the mod on my Nikon 50mmf/1.2. You will have to chop the Nikon to clear the mirror. I have a dremel and have shaved several Nikon primes. I use cotton balls taped to the rear element to ensure no metal gets inside. If you are concerned about your ability to do the job, I would be willing to do a swap as I am considering going to Nikon and the tab won't affect me. I bought mine new from Matsuistore in Japan in May and have used it once. I have an older Nikon 55mm f/1.2 and an Olympus 55mm f/1.2 that I use for low-light. I didn't want to scratch the lens so it never left the house. The lens is a serious mint condition, albeit the mod with all paperwork, box, and caps. No hood. I paid, I believe $488 with shipping.
Just a consideration if you don't feel comfortable doing it.
By the way, the first Nikon I modded, I got some very fine shavings in the lens, but it was a 50mm f/2 and I still use it occasionally without notice.
Well I finally received my adapter and got my answer. Had to grab the thin snips and cut off about 1mm from the top of the protective tab in the back so it could fit inside the 5D lens cavity without scraping the body. No Dremil required. But I crossed my fingers before pushing the shutter with the lens focused at infinity!!
Pretty lens. I will get to play with it next month in front of a bunch of Canon reps
i haven't ever tried to mount a 50/1.2 AI, but my AIS had to be modded so that the tab wouldn't gouge the mirror box. Keep in mind, this was on a 5D that had NO adapting issues w/ Zeiss 21 and 28... so it was a "good" 5D.
whenever "modding" nikkors, i would just rip the tab off with some pliers. Takes about half a second, and it doesn't have to be pretty.
I dont know so much about these 50-ish Nikons - is it possible to use any of them - for example a 55 1.2 Nikkor-S.C. or Nikkor-S (both non ai...?) on a 5D?
Meaning - is there a difference between all these versions for use on a 5D?
Silentlight, I don´t mean to hijack your thread, hope its ok that I add this question here...
I should however warn you that 50/1.2 shows a minor amount of CA problems wide open at high contrast areas. Close it to f2 and it's not a problem. 9 blades gives you nice stars.
