I hate these rumors as much as you do, but this one I kinda believe... An insider (no, I'm not telling who) hinted at a press release in April and store availability in june. And that was all, no specs, no nothing, just two dates.
But then I stumble across this over at DPR:
The new 5D II will not be released at Photokina, but instead will be a surprise announcement on April 22, according to a source I am unwilling to disclose.
The specs of the new camera are as follows (final name unavailable):
- 15.3 MP full frame CMOS sensor (vastly improved light-gathering capacity per pixel: improved micro lenses; miniaturized micro circuitry; enhanced signal/noise ratio)
- Weather sealing same as 1Ds Mark III
- Dual Digic III with all-new "CXR" NR system reported to best 3rd party NR software. Available as a C.F with 4 levels of customizable parameters.
14 bit A/D conversion
- ISO 12800 (C.F. up to 25600)
- Reported 1 2/3 stop sensitivity improvement
- All-new 29-point TTL CMOS sensor
with 12 cross-type for F/2.8 or faster lens
(35% faster than 40D)
- Micro lens fine adjustment for up to 14 lenses
- 300,000 exposure shutter durability
- 6.0 / 3.0 fps
- 3.0" LCD
922,000 pixels
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- Live View (improved from 450D; latest generation)
That one has surfaced a few times, and I think we're all hoping it'll be true, but at this point it's just a very nice rumour. It would certainly be a big "up yours" to Nikon and the D300 if they DID release this camera, and might shut up all the whingers who are constantly going on about how Canon come round in the night and write naughty words in fridge magnets because they simply don't respect their customers anymore.
We'd all like it to be true, and it does sound the most realistic so far. However, the way rumours circulate, it's quite likely that your 'insider' is simply repeating what's been going around various forums. Remember chinese wispers?
Yes, this is old news. It's also not from the only dpreview member who has had a reliable track record for predicting, guessing, or revealing what is next--tsiphoto.
Lol, sorry about the repost guys - It was news to me, but then again, I am very slow.
The spec sheet is an exact printout of my wishlist, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping like a madman. Looking at various photography sites, I'm not the only one.
But I sure as hell won't sell my 40D before an official announcement from Canon! If the spec sheet is true, it will be one hell of a camera.
Were all waiting for 95% as good a 1 series priced at twice 40d series. They will built it just depends on when. There's interest they just need the will. 5D = Nice sensor, son of D30 body. Hopefully next spin of the wheel they sex it up a bit with more capabilities.

I'm looking for the FF image quality and fine detail, in a 40D-sized body. The 1-series are just too friggin huge for my tastes
I follow every canon camera body that comes out and look for trends.
When the 1D MII came out at 8mp in Jan 2004, if you did the math a 1.00 crop with that pixel density came out to 12.9mp. Incidentally, the 1Ds II sensor at a 1.28 crop is 10.46mp. I imagine the 1D MII sensor was the 1Ds II sensor scaled down.
Then the 5D came out April 2005 at 12.84mp. Very coincidental.
I doubt canon would completely retool sensor density for the 5D. They just take an existing density and make the sensor larger.
The 1D MIII came out Feb 2007 at 10.4mp. a 1.00 crop of this sensor is 16.57mp.
I would expect the next 5D to be about 16mp. Any difference from this would require different sensor technology.
I imagine they are trying to get the 1Ds III out the door so that the new 5D does not cannabilize sales.
It was a year between the 1Ds II and the 5D release. It was a year and a half between the 1D II and the 5D Release.
The 1D III came out in Feb 2007. The 1Ds III came out in Aug 2007.
I would expect the new 5D by August.
For what its worth, the SD900 had pixel density which is the equivalent of 226mp in a 1.00 crop. However, this is a CCD sensor. 226 Megapixels....
Considering the difference between a SD900 lens and "L" Glass, I guess this puts to rest the issue of lens resolving power-- Lenses have a long way to go to reach issues of resolving power.
I heard it from Canon rep exactly 1 year ago. the 5D II is 16m with ISO 6400 and obviously dust cleaning and live view. Never got the release date as I believe the Canon is waiting for the market condition. I am pretty sure they already have it build.

No way in HELL they would build a new camera and wait a year to launch it. Pretty much the safest way to lose out to the competition. Nikon has set the bar pretty darn high with the new D3 in regards to IQ - If canon had the guns to blow the D3 away, they would have done it already.
My fingers are still crossed for April 22. but a tiny voice inside my head is saying August 08 instead. Ah well, more time to pony up the dough, I guess.
How do you think macroeconomic conditions may affect Canon's decisions?
With the dollar continuing to sink against the Yen and a consumer-led recession looming in the US, I think Canon would be well motivated to get the 5Dmk2 out asap before conditions worsened.
Canon probably makes twice the margin on a 1Ds III than a 5D, so I think that they want to make sure they get all the early adopters to buy the 21mp 1Ds III before they put out a 16mb camera. 16 to 21 mb is only a 15% increase in the sides of the image. Not a real big deal. If a 16mb 1.00 crop camera comes out then it certainly will canabalize 1Ds III sales to "Prosumers".
I myself, want three bodies, a 1.00 crop, 1.28 crop and a 1.60 crop. I have the 1D II and feel that 8mp is plenty of pixels unless you want to heavily crop. I am willing to wait and pay up for a new 5d so I can get a live view, a bigger lcd and a few extra pixels. The pixels aren't as important as the camera features. Then I shall replace my 6mp 1.6 crop camera. I will probably wait for at least a 12mp camera.
However, if the 5D did not exist, then I would probably buy a 1Ds, maybe a used Mark II.
So for me Canon gets less money out of me for having the 5D. Alas, I am but one of millions of consumers..
