Can anyone answer this question and if they can please state why, I have a friend who cannot make a decision? Canon 10D or Nikon D100? Which would you choose?

I ended up going with the 10D, but that was after looking at lots of reviews and weighing my options. It was better for me and I love it now. But, if you already have access to some nice lenses, then the Nikon might be the better way to go for now, if you can get it at a good price.
Many of us here prefer the Canon glass and so go with the 10D or in my case earlier the D60 and then the 1Ds, but Nikon makes fine machines and good glass. It really comes down to which you are more comfortable with and what you want to do with it. I suggest you go to a camera store and hold each and if possible try both out before you decide.
I have always preferred Canon but have many friends who feel just as strongly the other way.
Mmm I quite fancy the D100, but I do not want to be taken in that direction simply because I have access to extra lenses, I would prefer to buy the 10D if it is a better all round camera, really undecided on this one...
when people ask me which way to go, my first question is do you own lenses from either make - I normally would recommend going with the body you already have lenses for - cuts some of the costs. I agree both Canon and Nikon are good. As far as extra lenses - if you belong to a camera club, someone there will let you use a lens if you are on a day trip. I got the first 10D in my club - showed them a 16X24 enlargement from the 10D fine jpeg mode - two others now have 10D bodies and one of the guys sprung for the 1Ds. My next quest is a 24X36 from a RAW image. I really think this camera can do it. Right now, it looks like Canon is first in line technically - and I believe they plan on staying there. Canon fixed the magnification question with a full frame DSLR - Nikon is playing with developing lenses. I like the full frame solution.
Young man, hopefully you know that camera and lenses are tools. Although in my humble opinion the Canon 10D is technologically a more advanced camera, the Nikon D-100 is also a very capable tool. If you have lenses of one or the other, the answer to your question is obvious.
Do I have a Hasselblad because that is the "best" there is? No, I have a Pentax 645 because that is exactly what I need and feel comfortable with. You have to go to a store and handle both cameras and try to determine which one makes you comfortable to shoot with. If money is a limitation and you want to buy new, the Canon 10D will save you some money.
My point: both are very capable cameras. You should do well with either one.

I like the fact that Nikon is developing lenses based on the image circle which exists now, specially optimized for the technology of digital and not a mixed paradime of 3 or 4 image circles, They have a 12-24mm lens that is amazing , (i own it) these new lenses a engineered for the medium of digital imaging, and issues like chromatic abberation and edge to edge sharpness. Full frame what does it mean, you shoot what you see thru the lens , not what you wish were there. I never think about it any longer, ergonomics mean so much more to me than these issues, the D100 "feels" so great in my hand, the image pops up with a histogram reference immediately after I take a picture, Adobe Capture RAW handles my images NOW , not whenever the next version of photoshop comes out, the spot meter is 1degree which means the world to me , my battery life is 2 to 3 times better than the 10D, I have no weird AF focusing issues. Nikkor glass is simply amazing, and the TTL Matrix metering for flash is unrivaled,
Both cameras are better than most people who shoot with them , have fun take them both for a spin. Believe your images and shoot some pictures!
When I had to make this decision I approached this same issue by trying to evaluate each manufactures entire product line. At that time I had nothing, but I did know that as my photography would progress (I would hope so) I would start to acquire the "tools" necessary to achieve my goal. I started with an Elan IIe and a cheap lens full knowing that I dreamt of the day I would have enough income to purchase those specialty and more exotic lenses. Digital came around and I started to immerse myself with things like PS and building PCs simply because it was another tool. My point being: Its a process that has to be evaluated carefully. Each brand has its advantage but things like will this F, DX, auto focus, etc work with my A or B type camera all have to be considered. A pro I work with recently switched from Nikon to Canon simply (understated) because the newer technology took to long to come to market.
It could become a complicated question but ultimately you have to choose which tools work best for you.
It's been several months since I first answered this question and my response remains the same. I have, use and like both cameras. aesthetically I like the feel of the Nikon better but when I travel ( I do a lot ) I take the Canon. Ifeel it is more robust and can take some abuse. I use the best optics in both lines and feel they are equivilent. I shoot only RAW files and convert the Canon raw files in C1 DSLR-LE. I LOVE that application. If I am shooting a lot, I am not willing to give up the auto-rotation of verticle shoots with the Canon. I have never found it easy to exhaust the battery with either system ( I use an independent battery on the Canon rated at 1400 mah.

In all honesty, you simply can not go wrong with either. Owning both I can see advantages that each possess over the other. If it were down to a body-only decision I prefer the D100 as it has a spot meter, instant power-on/wake-up (the Canon seems to take forever), has a better AF particularly indoors in lower light or poor contrast areas (conclusively), can review images instantly -- even while writing (the 10D must dump ALL images before reviewing any), etc.
However, the 10D gets the nod on ultimate, pixel-level image quality, has auto-image orientation, and has a 9-image buffer.
Ultimately you will be pleased with either body, but you have to consider the system as a whole.
Both these cameras as others have pointed out are fine cameras -- but still in the evolutionary phase of digital imaging so these are unlikely to be your final camera choices.
Good glass however can last a lifetime and these days whether you use Nikon or Canon can be used on their next models as well.
So if you don't have a substantial investment in either model look at the glass available and decide what you want to do.
Canon looks like it is opting for the FF route (as per 1Ds) which means you need the very best glass which is available NOW (Canon 'L' glass and their IS -Image Stabilized technology).
Nikon looks like it's adopting the smaller sensor route so it can go for "Digital Only" glass. You might have to wait a little before "Digital Only " Long glass becomes available
If you prefer this route ( I don't really like the idea of smaller sensors with multiplier factors -- more noise etc -- ask some 6 X 7 shooters what they think of 35 mm
then Nikon is the way forward.
If you want potentially the best possible quality at full frame resolution then choose the Canon.
Although I would say that Canon/Nikon is much the same as Ford/Chevy, I will add one argument for the Nikon. If you buy Nikon glass you have choices of three makes of camera bodies, Nikon, Kodak and Fuji (yes, each is a Nikon but they have their own flavours and strengths).
Although some Fuji's (and Canon's) have been showing up with focus problems, I have to say I'm glad my Fuji is back simply from a quality of image perspective. I used the D100 for a week, and while a great camera, I found the shadow detail not as strong and is more prone to noise. Not having used a Canon I can't say how that compares.
But, the most important thing is to grab a camera and shoot. Grab one now. You won't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon as they'll both (all if you count fuji & kodak) take great images. And the most important part of any camera is the 7 inches behind the lens.
I'm with William on this - buy the one you feel most comfortable with. Both are well specced and excellent cameras. As Photography's a tactile as well as cerebral activity, equipment that doesn't feel right in the hands, is likely to get less use than items that do.
I've also got to agree with John - Nikon are developing some interesting lenses, based on current technology that works. When it boils down to it, a body's a body and most (no matter which make or model), do pretty much the same job. Using the same lens and film, take a pic with a 25 year old Nikon FM, and then do the same with an F5. See any difference...? No.
It's the lenses that usually help to make us more creative, so I'm pleased Nikon are heading in that direction.
I've used both, the Canon seems to be better right out of the box in Jpg with
built-in flash.Using either companies flashes their close but the Nikon Flash
System has been tested in many reviews to be slightly superior.I shoot a
myriad of different shots Wildlife(Birds), some Sports if you shoot similiar
photos the Nikon D100 focus's faster with less delay.Also if you shoot this
type of photography a "Spot Meter" is very helpful, 10D does not have one.The
10D will get slightly better reviews because its newer and they have added
features I would expect thats only smart on Canon's part.However it took the
D30 and D60 to get to the D100 in similiar quality.As many others on this site
have said both are great camera's I agree.Most of the people on this site own
Canon and prefer Canon Lenses, I've owned both and have compared 3 same
Zoom Focal Lengths- 28-105, 70-300, 20mm fixed.Both brands are very close
in Resolution, etc etc, but unless you buy an "L" in my opinion the nikkors
have better saturation especially in "warmer Hues". Yes anything can be done
in photoshop, but if you ever have an application or just want to print directly
from card ready printer i prefer the Nikkors.Hope this was of some help. Curt B.
