Your stuff is cool and I love the fact that it's not all pristine and perfect ... it's off the map. Most of the stuff on dpreview and here is all technically perfect, and everyone says, "well done" even if it's a damn cat photo ... and I feel like if I post something that's outside the box, people will say, "Next time try focussing" or "the colour's off" or "are you a newbie"?

it seems all your photos of random people are shot from the waist level, kind of a whip the camera out, take a photo really fast, and hide it so they don't notice. Next you'll be posting upskirts haha
My question is similar to Brian's. I don't really see any art in this. I would be interested to see your explanation of the artistic nature of this photo, and don't just say "pressing the limits," or "out of the box." I am genuinely interested, because if there is art there, I want to be able to appreciate it.
mdominic found the shot, took the shot, processed the shot, posted the shot. He shouldn't have to explain the shot. You've already said you don't see any art there, so you are unlikely to appreciate it anyway...
great shot! I like your stuff and have even looked at some of your archived shots on your website. don't let any of the negativity get ya down, just keep posting great shots maybe they'll all catch on or maybe not...

mdominic: I really like your work. There's many wonderful and different senses I get while viewing your pics. Again, in my opinion, true art has lovers and haters. I personally love art that I hate since it evokes or provocates something in me. However, this is definately one that evokes wonder and mood, rather than the other. Great work.

All the posts for Frankie's images start to sound the same... Some love it, others hate it (too afrraid to admit). I am in the second group. I've seen too much of this stuff so far. Yes, the galleries are full of this stuff. That's my point. Compare it to Robert Frank? I don't think so.
Every image I have seen from Frankie on this forum looked like he wanted to "shock" the audience here. To wake everybody up. Like other sites where you can find birds and dogs, here you can find "pretty young girls" images (trying to be models). Now, when Frankie posts a shot, I get chills... Yes, he is a master shooting of his belt or "behind the back", with "shaky" camera, very high speed film, totally decomposed..... Now, how about something different?
Frankie, it's like you are painting the same canvas all the time...
We've seen you brake "the rules", how about to follow them for a change?
I really like your style and approach to photography but for some reason this picutre doesn't quite do it for me. I know I'm not much help but there is just something about it that doesn't work. I definately have to have a look at it more and maybe then I would be able to tell you why. Some of your other shots(Katz's deli, girl with dog...etc.) are far superior to this.

My simple answer ... art is something more than the sum of it's parts ... it evokes a mood or emotion. This red skirt image makes me think of New York ... the hustle and bustle and movement and colour and fragrance of the street. I FEEL like I'm in New York when I look at it.
Who is this girl ... what is she doing ... her life seems more exciting than mine does.
That makes it art ... it makes it good art, because I have a strong feeling.
Perfectly lit, pristine shots of 'Brandi' or 'Candi' or 'Janda' dressed up and made up and pushed up, in my mind, is still art, it just doesn't do anything for me and I don't feel anything looking at it ... so in my mind it's a cheezy poster in some college dorm room. Not art.

This is art, plain and simple. Sucks to perfection and perfect lighting and focus. No one bitches that Van Gough was all about texture and not a perfect reproduction ... well at least until he was dead.

Hey, bpuppy... Everything around us is art. I recently photographed very high end residence here in Toronto where owners had a "painting" in thier study done by a real live monkey in Montreal. All framed , lit and everything. For them, that was an art for sure.
When my 5 year old son makes a dudle it is an art for me!!!
I am not disputing the issue here. I am just saying it is good from time to time to break "the mold" and do something different.
As far as "feeling of New York" from the particular picture. Yes, you are correct, but you see it also looks like the Lady coming in the corner store at Queen and Spadina (in Toronto), or any where else in the world...

Of course you have the right to feel that way. I've made no claims other than that I like these pictures. I have posted some other work that is more main stream, like my stuff from Katz's Deli and my picture of the Moroccan school kids.
If you feel that it is art then it is. It you feel that it's garbage then it is.
For my documentary, "Sunshine Hotel", I was asked if I thought of myself as an artist. I answered that I don't think of myself, I think of the work, and doing things that I like. It's for individuals to decide what it is to them.
