1/640s f/8.0 at 560.0mm iso320

This was the 400 f/5.6 with a 1.4x II TC. Shot from a tripod in pretty good light, this combo works well as long as the light is good, getting pretty slow with the TC though.

Shot with the 100-400 at about 300 handheld. Very handy to be able to zoom with birds in flight, but the push pull makes it a little cumbersome.

The Big Bad:

I agree with what you said, but in 'real world' people usually only want to show their results, but not the process.

I can live with the photos only, but you are certainly right, some explanation will br MUCH better!

Photonic:

very nice! 500/4 is certainly a wonderful lens!

thanks to Phil too, very nice shots!

And big thanks to everyone else!

100-400IS on D30
400mm, f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO800
any bluriness is due to the D30's sensor not being able to resolve the fine hairs, and also because of my poor technique, not the lens

Great! Realy show what 100-400 can do!

shooting birdies in day light is one thing. shooting pro sports in poor light is another. the 400 2.8 is THE lens of choice for pro sports shooters---almost NEVER see a 100-400 anywhere except maybe at a daytime surfing event--for the guys who can't swing a 500 or 600 prime.

And most of us can't afford a 400 2.8 either.

Great.

rbsimages now has showed what 400/2.8 can do.

Anyone have some pro sports shots with ANY other lens?

here's one more for the 400/2.8, this one with a 2x on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/szekiat/nature/heron.jpg

heck, if u do bother to look around my photobucket, almost all my nature shots are 400mm f2.8 with some form of converter.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/szekiat/nature/
and all my sports stuff is a 400mm f2.8 without a converter.

I don't have a pro sport shot but I have a shot of an U19 Classic League game shot with a 400 f/5.6 and a 1D handheld.

Another lens to consider is the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8. First real pro-like lens I got and the results are amazing so far. I wanted the extra reach of a 400mm but when I played with the Bigma (50-500), I realized that there was not that much difference between 300 and 400, so I went for the 120-300. The f/2.8 is great for sports and nature. The bokeh is amazing. Poeple who don't know photography have often asked me if I create the nice blurry background in some of my photos by computer.

I will eventually get the TCs.

Anyway, here are two shots taken with this lens, the first at 300mm and the second one at 120mm (no matter what the exif says), both at f/4 if I remember correctly.

I'll try to post some sports shots latter.

The difference between 300 and 400 is indeed, not that huge, but when you put a 1.4x TC on for example suddenly your looking at 420 vs 560mm. If you use just a 300, then 420 is about the most reach you can get with reasonable sharpness. With a 400 you can get that 400mm reach already and at a stop faster and then add a TC and get up to 560mm. You then need to use a 2x TC on the 300 to match the 400 with just a 1.4x and of course a lens with a 1.4 is much better than a 2x......

Bottom line is that you should buy the lens that gives you the reach you need without needing to resort to a TC, and if you do sometimes need a TC, using a 1.4x is always better than a 2x

rbs — what a *great* shot of Tiger. Is it full frame or cropped? If full frame, how did you go about composing it?

Here's a few from the Atlanta Zoo and 100-400, I now own the 400 5.6, but I really liked the 100-400, someday I'll get another one, or wait till they come out with a new version.

Yes it was processed and cropped. I made full size 100%prints and the detail is outstanding
