Small orange fly that jumped every time the flash went off in ETTL. Finally had success in manual flash.

Interesting! Perhaps the double flash made the fly jumpy. Have never seen one of these that I can recall.

Yes, it jumped at the pre-flash.

I've been advised the fly might be Neogriphoneura timida - for those who need to know.

I like number 2 best.

I used to use manual flash all the time until I started using the 270exii and have to use the camera menu to adjust the power output. Why canon couldn't make the key they use for flash expose comp adjust the flash output when in manual is beyond me.

I use the 580EX, and with that flash you adjust the power on the flash.

I usually use ETTL because it gives better exposure control when I'm constantly changing magnification, but will go to manual if the critter is affected by the preflash.

We have metallic green doli flies here that are impossible to capture with TTL.

Nice photos I have never had any problems with ETTL scaring off insects. I am not sure why not.
