Is there any light leak user report with the RX1RII?

Fred, my serial number indicates that it could be affected.

How would you suggest that I test for the light leak?

Here's what I did - ISO 3200 (or above) @1 second (or greater): Take a shot with cap on lens, using the brightest flashlight you have shining directly on each corner of the extended EVF, where it meets body.

For me, pointing the light at the left edge produced a blue flash on the edge of the frame. I have a "ballistic grade" LED flashlight, so it's probably more intense than direct sunlight. Nevertheless, it was affected, so most likely I'll be sending the camera in.

If your camera serial is within the above range, I would send it in. If light passes through the EVF opening, dust and moisture could reach the sensor as well.
Also, there could be other 'silent' fixes.

If you are not the original owner, will Sony exchange the camera?

Great question. I have run into this with warranties before. Some OEMs it's the owner and some it's the gear regardless. I think Sony it's the gear not the owner.

We need to see what they are planning to do. this is going to be interesting to watch how they handle this. To me they should replace all units affected. That's me though

Aaah, teething problems - apparently, even Sony is not immune to initial issues, which are not limited to only Nikon and Canon .

Sony's warranties are transferable.

Fred,

I just want to thank you for how helpful you've been with my new RX1rii. I really appreciate your insightful testing and practical advice on setting up the camera, accessories, etc. I read several photo websites regularly (FM is the only group of forums that I read reguarly) and find your advice and comments to be the most practical, balanced and informative of any that I have seen. I also find this place that you have created to have the best group of posters for info and inspiration on the web.

As a side note, to show my appreciation, I now try and make all my photo and computer purchases through your B&H affiliate link.

BTW: I just called 1-239-245-6360 and the Sony representative told me that my camera won't be repaired. Instead it will be replaced for a brand new one. I really wanted to get it fixed instead because the lens is perfectly centered but he said that won't be possible.

FYI: The FedEX return shipping label will be here today and once Sony gets my RX1RII, it will take 7 business days to get the new one.

In that case they must be sending the replaced cameras back to Japan, either for rework to be sold as 'B' stock or to reclamate parts for new bodies.

They can certainly recycle the lens and sensor. The rest just trash IMHO

Fred, I thought you said earlier your RXIrII's are not in the affected serial range?

Initial reports came from Europe. Apparently different countries have different serial number ranges. For the US, the affected serial numbers are from 6310198 to 6311127.
Most folks who pre-order the camera in the US are affected by the recall notice.

Sorry to hear that. I suspect you are right about the possibility of some silent upgrades and I bet your replacement is as sharp as the one you tested.

Mine is in the range too. I am not sure if you have to send in all the accessories or not. The lady who took my information said yes but I would get instructions on that and all I got was the label etc. So what do you need to send in--- battery, strap, instruction manuals ?
