I was aiming for that sort of effect with only this individual growing at a suitable angle. Ideally, I would have removed the thin blade of gross on the right side but I could clone it out.

It is actually the slightly sharper of the stereo pair. Your eyes overlook the discrepancy.
Because of the needs of the stereo software, more background is needed than for the single image, such that the latter may be cropped after the stereogram is made.

Thanks. Treble TTL flash. The main gun was on an L-bracket to the left, at hot shoe level and angled towards the gills. The two others, less powerful but closer, were to either side, one more to the rear (danger of flare if +/- directly into the lens), and both angled downwards at about 45 degrees. All units had moderate diffusion.
This is my standard arrangement, except that the main flash would be directed downwards, at the subject, and one of the others might be at the same level as the subject.
Triple flash is something I have only started using in recent weeks with digital, although I used it quite a few times with film (where you wait for days to see the results!).
The same effect could have been made in sunlight, with a reflector/diffuser of fill flash illuminating the gills.
