Frogfish: Interesting point of view. Horses for courses, depending on your needs.
I am very happy to stay (for now) with my versatile (for my needs) 80~400G, plus my 600/4 plus TCs when I'm doing distant wildlife.
And yes, I've even taken that big beast with me by plane, though not in steerage. Perhaps I could do as well with the 200~500 instead. Maybe. But my point remains that the 5x zoom capability of the 80~400G is getting a tad overlooked in the hoopla over the new zoom.
No big deal......

Is it just me or are these both out of focus Doesn't appear to be much of a testament to this len's capabilities.

No, it's not just you.
I believe in the first image the focus is on the right wing and in the second - the left wing.
I don't think it's a reflection of the lens - but rather my photography skills.
Will try for a better shot or two next time.

Another one with some PP, no more than I normally do though.

Outstanding captures Howard. How does it compare to your 200-400mm?

I'm not Howard, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and lighter. Make nice images.

Hard to argue about the lens's capabilities when you see images like the one Howard Kearley just posted...
Nice job Howard... definitely a dream shot for me, as I have found kingfishers to be among the most unapproachable birds on the planet!

cheers,
bruce

Great shot Howard - my lens just came in today and I was thinking of taking out tomorrow morning - but it's supposed to be pouring down rain

I'll live vicariously though your stuff

There is a group on Flickr devoted to the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 with around 2k of photos.

https://www.flickr.com/groups/nikkor_200-500mm_f56e_ed_vr/

Just keep in mind these are from all skill levels and they may not all reflect the true capabilities of the lens. I can tell you from the limited time I had with the lens I'm impressed, much better IQ than the Tamron 150-600 I'd been using. I know someone that has some serious glass and bodies that just started using one last week and he absolutely loves it.

Would you mind sharing the AF settings used for this?

Both but overall knowledge of the bird behavior and patience. I don't think you can nail this type of shots without these two.

Agreed.

But I'd also say that the camera probably had a considerable say in this one. If it were me I'd be shooting at the full 11fps the D4s is capable of ... and to capture a shot like that you will need those 11 fps or be one lucky SOB

Howard ?

Good point, and as I admired Howard's kingfisher shot at ISO 8000 I was admiring the noise minimalization capabilities of the D4s!
