Has anyone used the Zenitar 16mm Fisheye lens on a full frame or 1.3 crop camera (preferably the 1D Mark II)? I have read a couple of things that have made me wonder how far the rear element goes back, and I didn't know if it might go back too far for these cameras?

Also, if you have any pictures preferably with a 1.3 crop camera (but any would be great), could you post an example or two?

Syn Ack:
You have a good copy. My copy is not like this at f2.8. It doesn't look sharp until f11 and it is best at f16. However, I am happy with it as it is a very good f16 fisheye for ~$130.

Brian:

I have an EOS mount version. It works with my film body EOS 10S as well as digital rebel. I don't have a 1D-MKII. The rear filter go as far as ~1.1mm beyond the mount. Note: More if the rear filter is loose.

Thank you Syn Ack and Tommy.

Syn Ack: Your copy does look very good at f/2.8 with the reduced resolution photos. Do you have any larger ones that you wouldn't mind showing?

Tommy: Thanks for the estimate on how far the rear filter goes beyond the mount, and the note on the 10S.

I would still like to hear from anyone that might use this lens with a 1 series digital camera as well. I am not sure how much clearance I have. I feel better, but still not comfortable. I have heard some people reference that if you loosen up the rear filter that it might actually help the image? I am not sure about this, but obviously this would make the situation even tighter.

I would also like to see more photos if people wouldn't mind sharing them!

I have been using this lens with my EOS 3 without any problem. Mine is M42 version. I also have ELAN II but it only work when the aparture is wide open. I don't know why, but I don't care since I mainly use EOS 3 (which I am selling now to move to digital)..

My sample galleries with the Zenitar::

Reportage shots:

Landscape:

I had to disassemble mine (i.e. take out the rubber focussing ring and the focus mechanism) to tweak the focus a little as it was not sharp at f/8 and below. I also mentioned about the rear-filter trick about a month ago in a previous post, but YMMV as if you're using a 1.3x or FF camera.

Could you discribe the process on how you tweak the lens' focus. My copy is not sharp at f8 and below as well.

Thanks

Thank you Hiromu and Wenyao.

Wenyao: You have some nice pictures. What does YMMV mean though?

Also, I am still curious if any one has tried it on one of the 1 Series digital cameras.

Here's the reply I got from Mike Fourman of kievcameras some time ago: (the usual disclaimers apply: if you break your lens, that's your business. I almost damaged mine while adjusting the focus as described below, so it's your choice to take the risk.. Nonetheless, mine works nicely for f8 and above now, with f16 being the sweet spot for sharpest focus...)

we have to adjust it is Very simple
Take the rubber bend off the lens( focusing)
finf 3 screws under
Put the lens on infinity
unscrew them till the focusing ring fill loose
turn the ring till 1.2 will be across ofrom the red focusing dot
screw them back
Put rubber ring back
Should help
Sincerely
Mike

As for the rear-filter trick:

hope this helps!

YMMV = your mileage might vary.

Probably no one wants to use a el-cheapo Zenitar on a 1-series body The Sigma 15EX or the Canon 15mm fish would be more 'professional' candidates on a 1-series body.

I used the Zenitar on a 1D without any clearance problems.

Thank you Guido. This makes me feel better. Has anyone tried it on a 1D Mark II or 1Ds?
