p.2 #1 · Carry Speed or Black Rapid Sling Strap

UPDATE:,wow, what about 14 months can do. I would not say this was abused in any way. I've never been a fan of this material and I'm certainly not now. I generally carry a 7D, battery grip, and a 70-200 on the strap and hadn't noticed this until going to a game tonight.

I will contact CS about this but will likely order a Black Rapid to replace it. I will still try to reuse CS connectors and the safety strap on the BR for a little merger, if possible. But I want a secure canvas strap.

Please excuse the iPhone photos taken in the stadium restroom, poor focus as I was in a hurry and needed the light in there to see this better.

well, yeah with a slight modification though as their attach point hardware solution is rather lacking.

Cinch and Cinch 2 with C-SLR C Loop

this is one of the original cinch 2 straps. the friction blocks are way overkill. they have redesigned the pattern and dialed it back a whole lot. due to the modularity of the strap I easily flipped over (gripside out) for a nice slide w/o trying to dislocate my shoulder.

designed and built not to fail or come off under normal circumstances. real machined alloy hardware, not luggage based components.

works with most AS based plates and without in just your tripod socket. it is essentially hardware agnostic using the 1/4-20 thread available on most if not all camera bodies and most plates.

This looks like a nice strong setup, but It seems like if the camera is upside down that it would be hard to grab the grip.

On the setup I use the grip it facing up and you can grab it like your grabbing a gun at your side.

Anyway, we all have a strap that we like and can recommend and what ever strap the OP picks is all good.

Man I've never seen a strap fall apart like that. I think if the holes where not in the center of the strap then it may have not ripped apart.

it has to do with a number of factors.
quality of the neoprene
stretching
what other material it came in contact with. sweat. had more then my share of stretch material crumble and tear.

I actually prefer the Boss Strap, because it's seatbelt wide and comfortable. Unfortunately there is not an easy way to attach it like the Black Rapid.

Now I'm using the Black Rapid system with the Really Right Stuff Arca Swiss attachment system (RRS camera L plate & mini clamps) and a Bos Tail for redundant or secondary attachment, attached to the L bracket on the bottom.

Right now it's the most comfortable, safe and handy way I've figured out to hang one or two cameras without using a neck strap.

Would not swap my Bos Strap system for any. Just buy extra tails.

well, I rarely get into gun fights with it and of course one of the first rules of taking a picture is to have the camera ready and in hand. in the case of the camera body mount the weight of the zoom lens positions the camera just about right. in the case of the lens mount my hand is generally on the barrel to stabilize it because it is rather large and momentum prone. while not as "speed accessible" as the other position it is preferred with the longer lens for maneuverability in somewhat tight areas. this is especially good in little plastic sheds that pop up all over the place during outdoor events usually or when you have multiple males standing side by side indoors in front of porcelain . it can stay tucked out of the way pretty well.

considering the varying work I do it ends up doing pretty well. its taken me only about 35 years to get to this point.

in the end its what compromise we adapt too.

paul,

The Bos strap system connects to on or even both the cameras strap lugs which to me is a great advantage as they are designed to carry a load which the tripod mount isnt

The system is in two parts with the sling and attached to the camera is a strap (The tail) which connects to the sling. All very solid and frees up the tripod mount for its intended use..

The attachment tails are I think $9-00 ea so you have one for ea camera and one for each heavy lens if you are lucky enough to own lenses like the 70-200 and up

go to http://www.bosstrap.com/

best

Tim

CarrySpeed.com is now under construction. They have a Canadian site that is up but I didn't notice a "Contact Us" page so I sent them feedback and photos on Facebook.

I've already ordered a new Black Rapid.

if you search dpreview, it has a long thread forum "do not buy carry speed" topic that listed it's faulty design. It looks like it's a legit complains. I was interested in buying but refrain to do so after reading.

I know that remark wasn't directed at me but it holds true.

I recently converted to the Holdfast Money Maker black American Bison set-up with a Boss Tail for redundancy (safety). It is probably (albeit a little pricey) the most comfortable set up I've had for carrying one or two cameras.

Just my 2 cents,

Roger

I kinda doubt you'll need redundancy on that rig. I think body parts will come off long before the camera base does. too much heavy metal for me. definitely an "acquired taste" product. where do you put your oats for snacks though? .

I had a BR before I went to the Carry Speed. I actually lost it somehow on a trip and that is when I found the CS and liked the connection method and safety connector. I'd never see HoldFast but fear with sports shooting the sweat stains that would show on that leather would make it unappealing rather quickly.

I had one of the original BR straps. like many things it was kind of cool in the beginning. but the cool factor wore off fairly quickly. will not travel back that route again. pretty happy with my hybrid setup. does the job w/o turning the setup into a series of compromises that are not worth the effort.

now that Holdfast gear is definitely designed to make a statement. exactly what that statement is I'm still trying to figure out. a number of things cross my mind but I'll keep then to myself for now

I wanted to contact Carry Speed and give them an opportunity to say "that failure was unusual, we'll make it right" or "tough luck" response. But it seems that for about the last week the site has an "under construction" placeholder. I'd think that makes it hard for an e-commerce site to do much in sales.

I do wish the BR sports strap was longer, but it is what it is and I'll live with it for now. It makes sports shooting functional and that's what I after.

I contacted the CEO of CarrySpeed as I wanted to know if they were going to be at PhotoPlus and what is the situation with the site. He called me and informed me that BlackRapid took CarrySpeed to court for copyright infringement. CS fought the case as long as they could but it all came down to being able to afford the court/attorney fees and CS could not.

CS is based in Texas where as BlackRapid is in Cali and that's where they filed it. So CS would have to travel to Cali every tme there is a court date.

CS has been handed off to an overseas company.

It's the same situation that happened to Luma Loops when BR took them to court. Luma had to stop what they were selling and release a new version. Joby has a sling and BR won't dear to take them to court because Joby has more money.

Sucks that BR or any company would do anything to smaller companies. It's great to have new products and encourages companies to push each other to make better products.
