The charger for M8 batteries is rather large. I was looking for something smaller, and found that the Canon S95 charger could work by making the proper adapting plug. Might need some black paint and a red dot now ...

Now, Li-Ion batteries are kind of generic, and many are sharing the same operating modes. I have been using non-Leica batteries in my M8 (OK so far) and never heard of a camera going nuts with non-OEM batteries.
If Leica wasn't charging >$100 I would buy their stuff, but at $10, these generic batteries are too good to pass on ...

That's odd. What happened? If you are using copper wires of large enough section, there isn't much that can go wrong (assuming you had a small charger with appropriate specs).
