p.1 #1 · Extremely Low Light D800 Real World Samples!

Hey everyone,

Here are a few shots I took earlier tonight of an outdoor fire-throwing performance using my new D800 and an 85 1.4G. Just wanted to give some samples in nearly pitch-black lighting. I gotta say, this is a great camera and handles extremely well, even in such dark conditions. Both images were shot at ISO 6400 and downsampled from 36 megapixels and slightly sharpened in LR4. Enjoy!

What settings did you use?
There's no EXIF information in the images.

What no 100% crops

How was the AF accuracy?

Cheers

It was very impressive. I was using an 85 1.4G, not a speedy focuser at all, but I found that even in dim lighting it wasn't focus hunting on the D800 and worked really well

And while I agree that many cameras shoot at ISO 6400 easily and do it well, I thought it was impressive that a 36 megapixel sensor could outdo its 12 megapixel counterparts. I rarely shoot over 6400 anyway, and many people try to avoid anything higher than the native ISO capabilities of their cameras to keep noise to a minimum- just wanted to give some perspective on night performance on the camera

hey just to chime in, don't have samples to post yet and don't mean to hijack. I used the same combo today after i picked up a D800 of my own. Compared to my D300, the AF is snappier (quite a bit, esp lower light), but missed focus maybe 20% of the time. Haven't had a chance to use AF fine tune properly, but going from 0 to +10 helped a tiny bit (decided to try +10 first until i have a proper chance to more accurately tune). Higher iso wise it's great too, and i'm loving the HDR and fun editing functions. I have a few gripes though...like how the exposure compensation button and command dials seem to rotate differently from my D300 (-/+ev's are opposite?), the monitor's slight green hue and erratic WB performance (2 consecutive shots have 2 different exposures and white balances). Battery life is so-so. It's at 70% charge left and i've done around 200 shots.

Do you have them reversed in the custom function on the D300? If so make the same change on the D800.

nope i didn't change anything on my D300, on my friend's D7000 it works like my D300. I tried to find something in the menu to swap it but couldn't. And the green hue is annoying esp compared to the D300's lcd. Sorry to veer off topic!

Get the digital version of the manual and use search.

The f9 settings allows one to reverse the command dial while f12 reverses the display indicators....

I shot some stuff at ISO 6400 this morning, didn't even keep them way too noisy for me.

Yep i fiddled with the camera and managed to change the ev dial. Anyway i find that sometimes 12800 is useable, and sometimes even 6400 is too grainy. At similar exposures. The wb/lcd/wb and lcd thing is really annoying though...

The sharpening + downscaling really did something odd with the sparks in that first photo. Nice, otherwise.
