How's the auto-focus speed? I was surprised to hear that the 50/1.8 G is considerably faster than the 50/1.4 G. It would be nice if the same is true of the 85/1.8 G.

This is not the case.
The AF of the new lens is slower than on the previous generation - it is similar to the situation with the AFS 85mm/1.4G vs. AF 85mm/1.4D. But focus accuracy is usually better with AFS lenses.
Most people wouldn't even notice. Potentially handball photographers in dim light might see a difference.
I don't want to share portrait images I took yesterday, but the lens draws faces quite nicely. Its sharpness shot wide open is astonishing - very, very nice.Bokeh is pleasing.
AF in normal shooting conditions is fast and precise (but from a "Top Speed" perspective it seems to be slower than the AF 85mm/1.8D)
Andy, thank you for posting those test shots and pictures, they make me want this lens even more. I shoot DX and seek a long portrait lens to complement my beloved Tamron 60mm macro. I hope that the 85mm 1.8G would fill that role, and also focus a little faster in low-light conditions.
I would love to see some shots from this lens on a DX camera. I would also like to have enough cash for all of the photo gear that I desire. And I want a pony.
What is LoCA like on the G? The one thing that annoys me about the D is the purple/green fringing outside the focal plane, more obvious in contrasty scenes. Has that improved?
Has anyone else had their 85mm 1.8G ship from B&H? I pre-ordered from there and haven't gotten notice of a shipment yet (and the lens still isn't listed as in stock). I'm curious whether they're taking longer than other retailers to ship, or if I missed the cut on the first round of pre-orders and am stuck waiting for a second shipment.
