I think, as has been said, the real issue with the 24MP APS sensor is what it demands from a lens. Diffraction effects will be more noticeable so will appear to set in earlier. That essentially means you would want a lens which peaks at F4 to 5.6 across the frame into the corners in order to take full advantage of the sensor. That\'s a tall order for all but the absolute best glass.
Diglloyd sad, that below f/5.6 he can see diffraction with the 24 Mpix Nikon D3x. For the NEX-7 we will need lenses, that perform best at f/5.6 and higher (hopefully my Leica lenses )
dierk
APS-C is hit by diffraction earlier, simply because the image is enlarged more to get the same print size. If you were happy with f/8 to print A4 size with your 16mp sensor, upgrading to 24 mp sensor won\'t change anything. The images will still look the same.
It doesn\'t matter what you see at 100% magnification, it\'s the output size.
Which seems to be a case for NOT getting a 24MP APS sensor since your saying the images will look the same as the 16MP sensor at that size.
But, for those who want/ expect the APS 24MP sensor to give the same resolution as say the Sony a900/850, it\'s going to require glass which will give similar per pixel detail at 100% view as those cameras. Otherwise, what\'s the point.
I agree with that. If someone doesn\'t print large, actually to the limit of the sensor resolution, all these extra pixels are superfluous. But, well, if you want the most advanced body, and it only comes with a 24mp option, not much choice is left for you. However, you need those superduper lenses only if you plan to utilize the full sensor resolution. But if you plan to keep on printing the same usual sizes, the same usual lenses would do, as long as you don\'t obsess scrutinizing the pixels at 100% magnification. This is at least my philosophy
Agreed. My dilemma in considering the NEX-7 is that I do use every single pixel from my a900 for a lot of what I do so I could only justify the cost if it could indeed offer me the same final IQ.
