As I said before, its all relative for everyone, and just for me, if a system either ends up being too close in size to what I\'ve got with my DSLR\'s, or costing thousands of dollars, it just doesn\'t make sense.

If someone wants to build a system around a NEX or whatever, then thats a bit different, if its their only camera. I\'m a sports photographer mainly, I need long fast glass, and a high end DSLR to earn a living.

X100, NEX, m4/3 etc all are just alternatives for when I don\'t want to fell like I\'m working lugging the heayv gear around.

iPhone usually is plenty good for day to day for me, but for vacations etc, I want more than an iPhone.

compacts aren\'t bad, nice size, low price, but the photographer in me wants a little more control, ability to shoot higher iso, more DOF control etc.

Thats where I\'ve always found stuff like x100, m4/3, NEX to fit.

Near DSLR quality and near compact sizes.

I think you are right about the niche for ILC cameras, but this is on a continuum. Some would like their ILC cheaper and closer in size to a compact and some would like their ILC with IQ closer to a DSLR and they are willing to spend a bit more, and put up with a little more size and weight. You sound like you are mostly toward the cheaper and closer in size to the compact end of the continuum and I am closer to the a bit larger size, higher price and better IQ side of the continuum. I think both m4/3rds and NEX would like to occupy the whole continuum, but right now m4/3rds is doing a better job at your end of the continuum and NEX is doing a better job at mine. I can imagine a travel kit for my vacations in which I would have a NEX7, the Sony 16 f/2.8, the Zeiss E 24 f/1.8, a Leica R 35 f/2, a Leica R 50 f/2, and a Leica R 90 f/2.8. For me this would be way lighter and way smaller than my DSLR kit, but still provide excellent IQ. It would be a bit heavy compared to some possible kits, but it would only weigh about 4 lbs, and would all fit easily in the bag I normally take my laptop in for travel. For me that is light enough and would work well. It also would be less than $2,500 because I am using my dslr lenses for much of the kit and $2,500 is within my budget for this type of kit. I can see that others would have other priorities, but maybe this gives you some idea why some of us are very happy about the NEX 7.
