Using Puts as my reference, the \'59-\'61 version is I, the \'61-pre-ASPH II, the pre-ASPH III, and then the ASPH. I think it makes sense to distinguish between the II and the III, precisely because there are good reasons for wanting one over the other. I might pick up a II one day. I love the lens. I am just not sure I would use it much, but these things keep their value, so I could experiment.
As for the Noctilux, there are 3 or 4 versions of the 50/1, all optically identical. The twist-on hood attaches differently in the first ones, and the last one has an ugly square plastic hood. Practical, but jeez. It is quite flare resistant, btw.
