I can add that the Canon 28mm f/1.8 is \"usable\" at f/2.8 for night shots with a mix of terrestrial subjects with stars in the background.
It still suffers from minor distortion of the stars i.e. \"bat wings\" in the extreme corners at f2.8 but it\'s not too bad and cleans up pretty well after correcting for chromatic aberrations and is considerably cheaper than the 24mm f/1.4.
