This is a test shot from the other night (the only one I have that relates to this discussion). The point that it illustrates is the time to achieve an effect, in this case, the spiral motion of a sparkler being walked toward the camera (I\'m in the shot and carrying the sparkler, you just can\'t see me. ).
The original is a little over exposed, but as stated, it was a test shot.
Details: f/8, ISO 100, Tv about 10-1/2 minutes (too long)
The important thing is that the sparkler was constantly moving and in the shot for no more than 15-20 seconds, if that. It shows white/gold, but there was a light (other than the moon) that was affecting the outcome. Against a dark/black sky, the exposure should be much shorter.
